...the election results last night were like a kick in the balls.
That, friends is a win for Democrats and democracy.
Do the Debbie Downers posting here today not realize that what was predicted was a Republican landslide based on history and polling and what happened was the Democratic Party held its own and overperformed expectations, even Eeyore-like predictions from Democrats? Red wave, more like a red ripple.
Democrats won governor seats in three states formerly held by Republicans. We won the Pennsylvania senate seat after Fetterman was torn down by everyone, including his own party, for his debate performance. Maggie Hassan (NH), Michael Bennet (CO), and Patty Murray (WA) easily defeated their Republican challengers in races predicted to be close. and The House is still competitive. We will probably hold onto the Senate, which means President Biden can nominate federal judges and have them confirmed, including any vacancies in the Supreme Court (come on, arteriosclerosis). Even a slight win in the House by Republicans should chastise them and keep them from going nuts with conspiracy theory investigations. Any bullshit impeachment quests are probably off the table, thanks to these results.
AND it looks like Lauren Boebert will lose her seat.
Finally, Trump and his gallery of cretins lost BIGLY! And because they did, Trumplestiltskin will go "death con 3" on Desantis, tearing apart the Republican party during the next presidential primary. He will actively undermine Desantis and turn his crazy cult against him. Trump will announce his run within a week. He will make it his quest to destroy Desantis, who appears to be the right-wing nutty heir apparent based on his successes in Florida. Trump loves vendettas and is "screaming at everyone" after last night's election results. He needs to work on his nickname for Ron, though; DeSanctimonious has six syllables; his cult of morons, imbeciles, and lunatics can't pronounce that many in one word. Watching Trumplicans unleashed on Desantis in Florida is going to be delicious.
Great fucking night for Democrats. Take the W!

(19,547 posts)Worse case scenario right now is a 51-49 GOP Senate and a 220-215 House. Those would still be a good day for Dems.
Most likely scenario is a 50-50 Dem Senate and a 218-217 GOP House. That's an amazing night for Dems.
Best case scenario for Dems is a 51-49 Dem Senate and a 219-216 Dem House which would be monumental.
And this isn't even taking into account the state races that went our way. It was an amazing night for Dems last night in the states.

And then if memory serves, the last time the GOP took the House, they didnt get much done, and if they spend their time fighting with each other, THAT is something we can run on, in two years.

(7,013 posts)It would have been a Win-Win but for our tepid and MAGA burdened DOJ. Go ahead and give the house to the Republicans and, if it's not too disastrous, we may have another election in 2 years. But if we rely on the good actions and good will of the people without informing them fully of the bad actions and bad will of the Republicans what will our excuse be when they strengthen their hold then?

I do find it curious that there's not more discussion about the#1 issue... Inflation
. It's very important to not lose sight of the fact that millions are hurting and hungry and can't pay bills. But evidently, there's nothing anyone can do? But wait it out?
jaxexpat
(7,013 posts)I still see inflation as simple price gouging in a vacuum created by temporary shortages. The markets realign with surprising quickness, but their duration is controlled by the same forces, efficiencies, which contribute to the realignment. As this point, inflation is being artificially sustained by middlemen who are taking windfalls from panic pricing opportunities they have a hand in generating.
There was one guy who agreed, Joe Biden, and he pretty much told the producers of petroleum products, for instance, to stop with the artificial scarcity and the unnecessary punishment it was bringing to regular consumers. Unfortunately, they were still nursing the damage to their control of the world's energy prices inflicted by his totally reasonable domestic drilling restrictions and don't give a damn what a Democratic president thinks is patriotic or not. The same could be said of international shipping concerns who stand to go broke or get "really" well as they scramble, reacting to new markets created by filling shortages created by geopolitical shenanigans.
I see the solution to inflation as the same solution to government corruption. Enforce current laws. White collar criminals and the wealthy/powerful can sit in prison cells just like rapists, thieves and murderers. Unfortunately, the equivocation which currently suffices for legal theory up and down our justice spectrum does not allow for interpretation or enforcement of statutes in ways which may cause the feathers of entrenched bureaucrats and energy dons to ruffle.
So whuddawedo? Take it, until we can't.

(24,503 posts)I wasn't really expecting much and got the results I expected. Just depressed that Indiana went from being a nominal Democratic state (at least in terms of governor and part of the legislature) in the 1990's and even elected Barack Obama in 2008 to Republicans having a perpetual and seemingly unbreakable stranglehold on the state since around 2005. Iowa used to be a fairly reliable blue state that gave its electoral votes to Obama twice and has similarly gone red since. Are younger, more progressive people just abandoning these states?
Bettie
(16,213 posts)don't tend to stay in Iowa. The dull-witted ones do though.
minstrel76
(83 posts)I'm an Iowa native and I grew up in Cedar Rapids, but live in Des Moines now and I know some pretty liberal people here-young and young at heart-who consistently vote Democrat. The problem is, we're all outnumbered here by the MAGAT hicks from the sticks in the rural areas and small towns, as well as affluent conservatives in the small cities and suburbs. However, from what I've observed, the younger, more educated Iowans are leaving not just because of political reasons, but because of economic ones; unless one is dying to work in agriculture, insurance, retail or factory, there aren't a whole lot of jobs around here that would be a good match for most degrees. So, after Iowa has spent all of that money educating the kids that grew up here, most of them leave for other states where there are jobs that better correspond to the fields that they studied and then never come back, except to visit family. It's basically Brain Drain and it's not just Iowa that is affected. But couple Brain Drain with the fact that in the rural areas, conservative talk radio is unchallenged and unfettered and the fact that the DNC doesn't see Iowa as very consequential in regard to national elections, and is therefore not willing to invest the money, time, planning, and resources that it would take to make Iowa a purple state again, and on top of that, take the fact that Republicans are really annoyingly good at tying local Democratic candidates to the so-called coastal elites, regardless of what the local candidate's views and personality entail, and the result is that Iowa basically becomes the conservative shitshow that it is now. Given this, I honestly think about moving away just about every day, but the problem is that, not only do I have friends and family here, Iowa is relatively affordable to live compared to other states where Democrats at least have a fighting chance at winning. My partner and I own a house here, but even if we sold it and moved to a more liberal state, there's no way we'd be able to afford to live there.
Bettie
(16,213 posts)we have paid off our house. Even if we wanted to move, say, back to Wisconsin where we both grew up, even if we sold, we wouldn't have enough to buy a new place anywhere.
So, we're stuck here, among the worst of the worst, as we live in a small town in a rural county filled with MAGATs.

As votes rolled in from across the country Tuesday night, Donald Trump said something truly incredible when asked about how much credit or blame he should get for the election results.

(7,912 posts)...to be posting what we now know to be Republican propaganda polling, even though posters were told repeatedly not to do it since they were not reliable and would only serve to depress the vote.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)DU anywhere anytime or any Dem for that matter would decide not to vote because of a poll? I would bet a zillion against that ever happening
Why is it never ok to just hypothesize and have it be just understood that no one knows exactly what will happen. That this poller says this and this one says that? And it's all just a freaking surprise in election night? Why does it have to be a serious science?
W_HAMILTON
(7,912 posts)...and yet we now know that, yes, in fact these Republican propaganda polling outfits were flooding the airwaves with their Republican-biased results as a means of depressing the vote in order to get their side to win. We *know* this now, since we can compare all their terrible calls to what actually happened.
So, if they didn't think that negative polls about Democrats worked, why would they invest so much in producing them and getting them out there?
So, no, I don't buy that argument about how negative polls aren't depressing turnout.
And that's fine if you want to dismiss all polls; but then people should stop posting just the negative ones and crapping on the positive ones. There were certain posters that absolutely were doing that. And it did serve to depress voters -- not encourage them and not to enhance our GOTV efforts.
