The first mid-term for a new president is supposed to be a shellacking by the opposition, and they blew it. Yes, we've taken a few tough losses. But this is no red tsunami.
Just more proof, in case you needed it, that the GOP is nothing but smoke and mirrors. Reality slaps them in the face once again.
Claustrum
(4,846 posts)They are now looking at 10 or under. That's disastrous for them.

(32,823 posts)Yes, gerrymandering, but as most experts pointed out, there really wasnt much leverage left there, they had pretty much done all they could following the 10 census.
And, looking realistically who was vulnerable there just wasnt 40-60 seats to flip!
Claustrum
(4,846 posts)that might be possible. I have a feeling the polls are relatively close, or actually slightly underestimated democrats.
True Blue American
(17,996 posts)That gerrymandering has its limits.
My State might have gone red, but it took a great deal of cheating on the part of DeWine and his flunkies to get there.

(3,943 posts)Considering people were supposed to vote the economy even I thought it would be a lot worse. Maybe people realize the truth about the MagaTs. Just like a lot if moderate Republicans I know who voted AGAINST Trump in 2020. The MagaTs are a fringe cult and the minority. Gives me some hope.

(1,266 posts)It would probably wipe out a bunch of classified docs that still haven't been turned over. And wipe out a bunch of other evidence of criminal activity as well.
Still, it would be wonderful karma. I can just imagine TFG going at a National Weather Service warning cone map with a large pink eraser trying to alter the hurricane path.

And the same should be for the 2024 election. Until he is on the actual ballot for the general election. Before the national convention he should not have any protection. Besides. There should be no protection when a crime is committed.

(16,899 posts)There is the NY and Georgia cases. Thank God in NY and even Georgia, a pardon for state crimes is out of the question when in Georgia, there are Federal Election laws that were violated as well.
TDFG is fucked no matter what he decides. He announces a 2024 run, the RNC cuts him off for pauing his legal bills as far as all the Legal challenges he faces.

(21,998 posts)Pelosi is a proven force when it comes to whipping votes and uniting the party. Somehow I can't see McCarthy holding the GOP together like that -- assuming he can even get elected Speaker by his own party.

Fuck them. Tonight will give Biden an incredible amount of momentum for the next two years.
My only question is will the M$M say "Repubs in ruin" or try to frame this as "good for Trump" somehow.

(5,499 posts)But to use an Obama word, the usual shellacking didn't happen.
We have to thank a lot of people for this.
Reliable long-term Dems voters.
Young people who got fired up over the issues.
People who just felt the issues were too important to not vote.
And, hopefully, some Repub voters who finally got serious about protecting Democracy.
A team effort, in other words.

(63,974 posts)and reading these posts are we Democrats okay???? what about Warnock did he get in? or are how many races still close to call?
And the House is 217 - 218? Wow, this is like Christmas morning and waking up to presents or am I being to hopeful???
Scrivener7
(51,090 posts)be reading, means a Warnock win is likely. (Georgians, please correct that if I am wrong.)
The House at 6:35 stands at 178 D 199 R with completed races, but there are still many races to be decided and predictions are for a very tight House. Not at ALL the blowout for R everyone has been predicting.
Boebert might be out.

(1,179 posts)for even more aggressive gerrymandering in Texas, Florida, and Ohio, and the lack of gerrymandering in California and New York (although New York tried), we would be looking at a Democratic House. I think that we are to the point where voting matters mostly for holding ground and gerrymandering is what gains ground. Of course if Republican courts continue to allow only Republican gerrymandering that does not bode well.

(61,793 posts)We need to fix what caused such low turnout in our Democratic cities. We just lost a senate seat we could have won, state legislature probably now has a Republican super-majority, and Republicans took over the state Supreme Court.
MyMission
(1,856 posts)At least there is no supermajority in the state house, only the state senate.
But we are screwed here in NC.
Loosing the Supreme court will lead to more Gerrymandering and anti-choice laws and rulings. We had a 4/3 advantage, now a 5/2 disadvantage. Democratic incumbent lost and open seat went red.
I am a proud native new Yorker today, not a proud NC resident.
Really contemplating a move back to the northeast at this moment.

Also, publicly announcing that they would shut down the government to force through cuts to social security and Medicare. And of course, their decision to back Trump no matter what.
They got greedy (surprise, surprise!), got overconfident, and went too far.
