She's fantastic - and I say that fully admitting to not having thought about her at all for at least 10 years!

(2,045 posts)Maybe she is the Greatest Of All Time, but I could make a case for Martina Navratilova. Margaret Court? There's no comparison to be made there one way or the other, because those were COMPLETELY different eras. In connection with Serena, though, I never will be able to forget and forgive about that ugly spectacle when she lost to Naomi Osaka in the U.S. Open final. Her sister Venus never threw nasty tantrums like that; she just played tennis. Which is what Serena should have done then.

(27,884 posts)I think it affected Osaka deeply and that the crowd booing her when she had won her first Grand Slam handily led to her problems on the tour and with the media. (The crowd bore some responsibility there, too, treating her like that). In my opinion, Osaka still has PTSD from that. And there was absolutely no reason for any of it.
Its tiresome to have people flog Serena over something she has said multiple times was a huge regret and for which Naomi Osaka, you know the person it actually happened to, has said shes forgiven her for and understands that competitive fire. The fact that you and others are still on this when racists to this day use this to dehumanize Serena, aka that cartoon published around the world depicting her as an ape throwing a tantrum, is really crappy.

And yes, the Osaka match debacle was horrible.
