It's Not Joe Manchin Who's Trying to Undermine Biden

Political Wire

” Joe Manchin has absorbed most of the heat from liberals angry that the Senate has often blocked President Biden’s proposals. But Manchin represents an overwhelmingly Republican state, and he has been willing to negotiate a meaningful (albeit smaller) Senate reconciliation package that would move forward key progressive goals.”

“The true archvillain of the Biden presidency is Josh Gottheimer, a New Jersey Democrat who keeps sticking the knife in Biden’s back.”

“Gottheimer is organizing a small faction of House Democrats to present a ‘counteroffer’ that would blow up the incipient deal with Manchin. The Gottheimer crew wants to take out the tax hikes on the wealthy that Manchin is proposing. That would mean what’s left of the bill could still contain the spending proposals, but it would lack the revenue measures that would make it a deficit-reducer, which is Manchin’s main rationale for supporting the bill in the first place. If that revenue is gone, Manchin’s support probably collapses, and the bill dies. Which is probably fine with Gottheimer, who may be evil, but isn’t stupid.”

BIOGRAPHY
Josh Gottheimer represents New Jersey's Fifth Congressional District in the northernmost part of the state, which includes parts of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties. He was first sworn in on January 3, 2017, and is now in his third term in office.

In Congress, Gottheimer serves on two Committees, including the House Financial Services Committee, where he is the Vice Chair of the National Security, International Development, and Monetary Policy Subcommittee and a member of the Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship, and Capital Markets Subcommittee. Josh also serves on the House Homeland Security Committee, where he is a member of the Intelligence and Counterterrorism Subcommittee and the Transportation and Maritime Security Subcommittee.

Hyperbole like “evil” and “archvillain” and the unsupported assertion that a Democrat who has voted with the President 100% of the time “keeps sticking the knife in Biden’s back” put this gossipy item firmly in the “unserious” column.

Both can be beholden to special interests and monied people who are pressuring them to block something that will cause said monied interests to not be able afford that 5th private jet, but will allow some poor people to eat comfortably for awhile.

Manchin has done enough to prove who's side he is on. Gottheimer has likely been flying under the national radar because he is simply one of 435 House members. He can share the scorn.

There has been a small group of Democratic House members that have been siding with more conservative policy during the past couple of years that President Biden has been in office.

there is more than enough self interest and greed to influence people on a strictly local level. I would look at local corruption before assigning international conspiracy.

Case in point, Senator Manchin, whose own family money has come from involvement in the coal industry. Some reports indicate that Manchin had received up to 4 million dollars a year in revenues from his coal investments. His family is involved in the industry.

That gives him plenty of incentive to protect the industry and kill any alternative and sustainable energy projects without any Russian involvement.

It's the cloture Rule in the Senate.

The previous Women's Health Protection Act - H.R.3755 - Women's Health Protection Act of 2021 passed the House on 9/24/21 218 - 211 and Gottheimer voted for it. Then it went to the Senate for a vote on 2/28/22, which failed 46 - 48 (6 NV), where Manchin refused to even vote to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to allow the bill to move forward for debate, despite the fact that Sinema did vote to procced.

The larger issue that the conservative party is lockstep is denying Democrats a win - even if it meant their mothers would end up dead.

McCarthy and McConnell have a solid lock on their colleagues and virtually nothing will pass without their sign off.
