Push for normalcy wins out in COVID wars

https://fox4kc.com/news/push-for-normalcy-wins-out-in-covid-wars/?fbclid=IwAR1WqYM3lJb4Y6lehi-lGBlIGiZHY5tbPsVcVtNYfIsoIU_fr0AIyHGcQ7g

A year ago, there was widespread optimism as cases were so low that the virus seemed on the verge of being defeated. Yet mitigation measures, namely masks and vaccination requirements, remained in place.

Now, almost all masks or vaccine requirements have been deliberately abandoned or overturned in court. The U.S. is averaging about 100,000 new cases every day, but movie studios are releasing summer blockbusters to packed theaters, families are celebrating weddings, and bars and restaurants are full.

Living with the threat of a COVID-19 infection has become the new normal for Americans who are ready to move on.

“People are tired of the changes that they’ve had to make to their lives related to COVID-19 and so eager to get back to normal,” said Mercedes Carnethon, an epidemiologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Since this whole thing started I have never known so many people to have gotten covid. Coworkers, family, doesn't matter.

They are all vaccinated, some not boosted as much as others, but all vaccinated.

Just yesterday I was talking to two who had just got over it and they were telling me all of the weird symptoms that are continuing. So long covid is still a possibility and random as shit.

And as this goes on I imagine hospitalizations will start increasing again because the world and specifically the United States just doesn't give a shit and new variants take hold that skirt immunity.

Masks around people that you don't know is literally the easiest way to slow this down and manage our economy and lives. Toss in vaccines, better treatment, and this can be manageable.

Throw caution to the wind and caution will come back and bite you in the butt.

But the whiny babies have won and can go out and get wasted at their favorite dive bar and get herpes too. Fuck them

That's too much of a risk to me so I wear a mask in public indoor spaces always and public outdoor spaces if they are more crowded than I like.

The long term issues are respiratory, heart conditions in those who never had such previously, cognitive decline unrelated to "regular decline", kidney issues and, apparently the development of diabetes. Probably more to be discovered.

Covid is a damn dangerous illness.

My grandparents could not simply say, "I am so done with this Great Depression" or "I'm sick of dealing with this World War", and make those things disappear.

The people of their time had to persevere to the end. The people of this time can't be bothered to wear a mask in the god-damned Walmart.

not just in terms of sheer numbers, but also as a percentage of the population.

But I guess if we don't look at it or worry about it, it's not real, right? And if we don't count the deaths as COVID, but call it something else, then that doesn't count either, so hey it's a win for "normalcy," everyone shut up and get back to work, and back to the restaurants and bars and amusement parks or whatever.

I try to have, like, "hope for humanity" or whatever, but people make it really difficult to keep up.
