WASHINGTON —

A Ukrainian official has provided VOA with exclusive photos of the aftermath of Russia’s five-week occupation of Ukraine’s decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant, showing what he says are Russian trenches dug into radioactive soil near a 1986 nuclear accident at the site.

There have been reports of Russian soldiers being treated in Belarus for radiation sickness.

Average Russian soldier probably has no knowledge of what Chernobyl is/was. When bullets and shrapnel fly, best place to be is underground (trench).

I do understand trenches in general, what I don’t understand is why they would dig trenches in a highly radioactive area. As you say, the soldiers may have had no idea. Maybe their commanders on the ground weren’t even aware. But somebody up the chain of command must have known. And even if you are a sociopath who doesn’t care about the welfare of your troops, you might want to consider how a decision that takes out all of your troops will affect your future as a commander.

You send this order down the chain. The small unit commander is ordered to defend this certain spot, and Mother Russia is watching him. He has his troops dig in, not knowing he is killing his troops. The company commander may know the area is contaminated, but doesn't like/is afraid the commander will report him for something, so he doesn't care what happens to them. And so on back up the line. This is the way Russian hierarchy/intelligence works.
