(22,174 posts)they (republicans) are flailing as usual in trying to get anything to stick. A question, is the bill contents out there somewhat where I can look at in detail? As a telecommunications guy, I was interested in seeing how they were going to deal w/ broadband, that is, is it simply to bring more people into the broadband universe by subsidizing subscribers, or expanding the footprint of broadband links across the Country, or what? I hope that this attempt in getting more broadband out into the public domains that need it is more successful than other prior attempts to do so.

(16,859 posts)I wish we could put some of these carriers out of business. I pay the cable company $56 a month just for my broadband. I don't have any cable tv, just internet. That's ridiculous! And lots of people are paying more than that. It would be great if they can do something to bring our prices down.
But I know that they're main objective is to get broadband to people who don't have access because they're in rural areas and such. I hope they're able to do that and make sure their rates are relatively low. They've allocated tens of billions to get it done, and I hope they do it and do it right.

(22,174 posts)she was a CPA, and my dad too, ran his own business too (Insurance)...kind of hard to run a business out of home when you can't get a decent broadband connection...thank god that they finally got it in, we were all so happy...but this was in a relatively sparsely populated portion of MO, how long is it going to take to get broadband into portions of those states that have huge rural areas w/ little to no services out there? I suspect a long time, if the carriers get to pick and choose where they implement new services in those areas that don't have broadband currently (IMHO this was the problem before, that the carriers determined where to put new services in, not the writers of broadband bills. The public utility commissions of each state too, I suspect had a role too, in determining where these valuable broadband dollars went and it often times wasn't where they needed the money.

(6,448 posts)set up their own fiber optic network. It costs me $90 a month and i'm getting better speeds than everyone i know! Through wifi 300+ Mbps and wired around 1,000 Mbps. Of course it took around 7 years, we had to establish our own Power and Light company, apply for grants from the state, and hold MANY votes during annual town meetings to secure funding. My property value went up by 20% nearly instantaneously, btw...

(1,347 posts)Our town has speed at 2.40 mbps, we have to turn every internet connection in the house off if we want to stream Netflix or Hulu, and even then we have buffering. The local service (Frontier) does no maintenance or upgrading. People who move to town now cannot get internet because Frontier's servers are full and there's no room for more. We went to a meeting about bringing broadband here about 6 years ago and nothing has happened yet, so I think we will be beyond your 7 years to get it. We have no options, only Frontier. When I try to upgrade my Macbook to the new OS, it says it will take 2 days, and then quits...

(6,448 posts)for 11 years. Video and streaming video was out of the question. There were "free" download periods between 2-8Am, so that sometimes worked. It's why i bought a laptop... so i could upgrade at the library or my in-laws house. I feel your pain. I lived it. It only happened here due to the years long dedication and hard work of multiple townspeople. Our property tax did go up a little, but that's not entirely due to the fiber network. We've only had the service since April... but it has changed our world.

(22,174 posts)everybody benefits from the increased and faster bandwidth! And to boot, you got a 20% increase in property values...that should tell people something about the value of these services!
