On Monday, Aug. 2, a 34-year-old woman in Gulfport, Mississippi, started feeling dizzy at work. She tested positive for COVID-19 a few days after that.
By the next Sunday, she was dead. Her husband, also in his mid-thirties, died from coronavirus this past Saturday, according to Brian Switzer, the local coroner.
These are deaths I wouldnt have seen a month or two ago, Switzer, the Harrison County Coroner, told The Daily Beast. Im seeing significantly younger folks this time around, but theres still this idea that if youre young and dont have comorbidities, youre not going to die.
But as the Delta variant pushes the states entire health-care system to the brink of collapse, those coming face-to-face with COVIDs victims say the virus target has changed dramatically, from older to younger Mississippiansoften healthy, and virtually always unvaccinated.

(129,636 posts)And for a full year, that was pounded out by health officials and the media. That age group was told to "wait" for vaccination, so I expect many said, well then why bother?
And with this variant, here we are.
This strident and adamant "advice" that has come out the past year about COVID that has proven to be wrong, and neglects to note that YES, believe it or not, scientists themselves are rarely in full agreement, even in normal practice, about what certain "facts" might really mean.
The unfortunate slow acknowledgement and actual sabotage of mitigation strategies and vaccines by the previous administration, and tunnel-vision by health officials who on one hand kept calling this a "novel virus", yet still treated it like it were nothing more than a bad cold or flu, just exasperated things.
The whole "break-throughs are rare" nonsense is yet another in a long line of examples. At least in this latter case, some are finally adding the common sense additional clarifications for people to indicate that "no, these vaccines aren't a 100% shield, but do help you fight it if you get it", which has always been the case for most other regular vaccines.
But it will take some time to purge the idiotic "Get the vaccine, throw away your masks, go back to normal, and go hug your loved ones!!!1!!!!1111!" advice back in May, that was probably the most ill-advised declaration and strategy to date.

(44,974 posts)skyrocketing infection numbers. All of it was totally predictable-variants were already spreading when we were told vaccinated don't need masks. And yes, breakthrough infections being "rare" is another example of authorities feeding us nonsense. Certainly with delta they are no longer rare.

(129,636 posts)involve human physiology vs human psychology. And this has become a core issue when it comes to mitigation because of how humans behave naturally, which is something that this virus (and other respiratory viruses or bacteria) takes advantage of to the fullest extent.
What makes this one unique compared to other respiratory viruses, is its manner of attachment to cells in order to start its replication process. The fact that it selects ACE2 receptors, which are located, to different degrees, all over the vital organs, is what makes COVID-19 so virulent and lethal.
I had found this illustration a week ago and as a former scientist, it just fascinated me -
The green clumps on the virus in the top animated gif, are the recognizable spikes, and in the 2nd one, are the same spikes unraveled, where they can then attach, and pull the virus right up to the cell it plans to infect.

(46,230 posts)That's how I viewed healthcare when I was 7 years old. And my father was a doctor. I challenged every shot, every blood test. I only took the Polio Vaccine without protest b/c it was on a sugar cube. I vigorously protested my tonsillectomy.
But of course, as I learned more about modern medicine, I also learned to trust experts (doctors, nurses, lab techs) who knew more than me. I now work in a partnership with my Primary Care doctor.
I just can't understand how adults can be so cocksure about immortality and immunity from the Virus.

I admit that when patients came to visit my father with serious heart conditions, I'd be sitting on the outside stairs, telling them not to bother with Dad. Rather, they should go get their sugar cube at the high school and they'd be all better. But then again, I was aged 5 years.

(19,145 posts)Being overweight is a comorbidity and it's more pronounced the more overweight you are. But what people forget is that we're an overweight country, 74% of adults over 20 in the US are overweight. 43% are obese. And these numbers are a few years old, they certainly increased during the pandemic.
This really bothered me since the start, people downplayed the deaths because of weight. When in fact 3 in 4 people are overweight. We're an out of shape country. Probably close to half the country is now obese.
So when someone says, oh, I'm not overweight, I'll be fine, there's a 3 in 4 chance they're not a healthy weight. A lot of people don't even know that they're overweight because they aren't obese and are not overweight compared to most of the people around them.
