Here in the DC area, ours get a lot of use. I've even stopped checking the price of the variable-toll (reversible) lanes. If the gates are open, I'll take them automatically. (We even have an extra one that we keep handy to loan to out-of-town guests.)

(42,862 posts)Didn't they have their own proprietary "Sun Pass" or something like that?
If you have an E-ZPass, there is no need to purchase a SunPass PRO. You can now use your E-ZPass to travel on toll roads in Florida.

(34,141 posts)Of course, they were trying to change that with the Suncoast Connector but they've dropped that for now.
The bill is an extraordinary reversal of a top Republican priority from just two years ago.

TALLAHASSEE Two years after ordering the state to build more than 300 miles of toll roads across rural Florida, state lawmakers slammed the brakes.
With little debate, the Florida House on Tuesday voted 115-0 to repeal the bulk of the controversial projects, sending the bill to DeSantis desk.
>>>>>>>
Just two years ago, lawmakers were nearly unanimous when they bypassed the typical road-planning process and ordered the Department of Transportation to construct three new toll roads: an extension of the Suncoast Parkway to the Georgia border, an extension of Floridas Turnpike to meet the Suncoast and a new route between Polk and Collier counties, long nicknamed the Heartland Parkway.
The bill was a top priority of former Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, who said the roads would revitalize rural communities and prepare the state for future growth.

(8,957 posts)SunPass PRO is a portable transponder that works in Florida, Georgia and everywhere E-ZPass is accepted. SunPass PRO offers drivers the convenience of paying tolls automatically from Florida to Maine and west to Minnesota, allowing nonstop travel with just one toll account.
SunPass PRO is a product of SunPass, Floridas Prepaid Toll Program.

(42,862 posts)... with a universal standard. (Imagine if roads were restricted to certain brands of tires... or websites were restricted to certain browsers.)
Not long ago I had a rental car in Texas and I was on a toll road in Dallas. The toll was 50-cents... but my rental car company sent me a bill for the 50-cents PLUS a $5.00 "convenience fee". (Sorry... that's not convenient at all.)

(32,917 posts)But I'm in Pittsburgh now for the last 30 years. I rarely take the Turnpike or any toll roads. Maybe once or twice a year, that's all. Rather not be bothered.

(16,955 posts)the Turnpike you pay close to twice as much by not having one.
Yes, there should be ONE standard for all US toll-roads. That would be SO 'convenient'... (sorry 'bout that "fee!" ).

No more little slips or stopping at toll booths.

(16,955 posts)if you KNEW somebody or were RELATED to somebody you stood a good chance to be a toll-taker for the PA Turnpike - and make really good money.
The 'union' fought for years against automated tolls (E-Z Pass) but COVID provided the push to eliminate the 'in-person' jobs completely. Felt bad for the sudden loss of jobs, but their elimination was LONG overdue......

(52,173 posts)basically about 3 times a year on either WV turn pike or very rarely PA. I was on NY through way for the first time in eons. I may get one sometime but I have no idea the cost.

(42,475 posts)Many of the toll roads in FL no longer have cash toll booths - they just toll by plate and charge extra for the privilege. Also, the airports now take SunPass to pay for parking.

(442 posts)We've had Illinois ones probably for about 15 years, ever since they started doing open road tolling. Illinois has had the 2x price for cash for a long time, but they took out all of the cash lanes a couple of years ago; now you're supposed to go pay online within 7 days if you don't have I-Pass. We moved from the Chicago south suburbs to central Indiana 10 years ago but kept our passes and our account so we'd have them when we go back to visit family and friends. When I was homeschooling the kids from 2002-2010, we were driving all over Chicagoland every week and they were fabulous.

(1,294 posts)I live in NY and its a must have.
I have it linked to a CC account so it automatically adds money to my account when the balance gets down to a certain $ amount.
I have no idea what any of the tolls are. And I dont care.

(42,862 posts)... at the time, my husband was traveling in/through NJ often... so we still have our NJ "branded" EZ-pass. (It's very easy to have them refilled with having a cc number on file.)

O'Hare, corporate HQ, and 2 major customer sites were located such that taking the tollway was usually the only good way.
When I retired, I got rid of it. I hardly had any $ left on it. Maybe a couple bucks.
I had it for 15-20 years.

I made the mistake a couple of times and man those several minutes of time savings come at a cost.
The DC area has what are effectively private express roadways, which you do pay a substantial price to use.

NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)Sometimes it's a crap-shoot and the non-toll lanes would have been just as fast. But if the price starts creeping higher, then I make CERTAIN that I'll take them. I'd rather be home (or at least rolling at a steady pace) compared to crawling or sitting in standstill traffic.

(12,132 posts)so I often find myself on toll roads because they are just quicker but I avoided getting the sunpass until they made it cost less than cash at the booth.
You have to pre-pay the pass and then the readers deduct from your account when you go through a toll station. I didn't feel it was right they could hold my money interest-free while they were almost certainly getting something out of that big pool of pre-paid passes. But they eventually made it so the pass users paid less than cash users so now I have one on both cars..

(42,313 posts)Live in Ohio, never go up to the turnpike. Got it since we have family in Florida that we visit once a year and avoid the tolls is practically impossible; it also came in handy when we went to PA and Boston this year.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)Except that one time... there was a big July 4th accident on the turnpike and instead of getting on at Somerset (to Breezewood) we just rode the scenic highway that was parallel to the turnpike.
It was a very pretty drive... very relaxing. Sure, it was slower, but WE were moving and they weren't. And the occasional stop-sign as we went through little burghs were only a minor inconvenience.
Maeve
(42,313 posts)But had a google maps failure this year and were glad that we had the pass. Yeah, it can be a longer drive, but we usually have the time and patience to be cheap thru PA

(130,090 posts)to Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side) for their toll (they recognize EZ-pass there too, which was a bonus) - https://www.niagarafallsbridges.com/index.php/crossing-info/e-zpass
In fact when we drove up there in 2014, they had only recently implemented it on the bridge we used. Went across the Rainbow Bridge.
Before I retired, since I was continually back and forth to D.C. metro for work (over the years my cars knew the way by heart and would drive themselves ) and the EZ-pass became an obvious necessity, especially since going through tolls like the one at the Ft. McHenry Tunnel on I-95 in Baltimore, could go so so much faster.
Nowadays with more and more doing the license plate photo tolls, I guess it might soon deprecate the whole electronic device method.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)If the express lanes around DC can read tags and EZ-Pass devices without the need for drivers to slow down to 10MPH at a converted toll booth... then those obstacles at the Nice Bridge and Coleman Bridge will soon be going away too, I imagine.
