General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsJust spoke to my son who volunteers at a food bank in his small rural community.
They're facing more people in need of help and less food to go around. Congress can't come up with a relief package, unemployment benefits are running out and many families are facing some really hard times.
If any of you have a few dollars to spare, donating to your local food Bank would be a very good use for it.

(12,400 posts)We make up food bags for the kids .
This week we made up bags for the kids for breakfasts and lunches for the next two weeks over the break. A lot of the kids didnt want them so there were quite a few left over. I got the OK to give them for the food bank in the community. Unfortunately The two largest were closed until next week, and the third didnt have any refrigeration. I had crates of individual milks. Fortunately enough of the people at school knew families that they could divvy them out to, but these families were not really needy.
Please get in touch with your local schools after the Christmas break. I dont know if they are like the Florida schools, but if they give out food bags, they might have a lot of leftovers by the end of the week. A lot of the kids dont take the bags and some of the kids just throw the stuff away.I know that some of this can be used for food at food banks so please consider this as an option.
All the food is packaged or pre/wrapped so not touched before being bagged.

(67,782 posts)It's one of the best ways to help people in need. Each $100 allows them to provide 250 meals, which is amazing. It's not that difficult for many of us here on DU. I'm sure lots of us can chip in a few dollars. And with many of us not going to restaurants or spending money on recreational activities, the money we save can help feed those in dire economic straits.
When I see those reports of hundreds of cars lined up to get food for their families it breaks my heart. They spend hours on line just to be able to feed their families. So sad.
So please, if you can do it, help those who can't afford to buy food!

(269,157 posts)We both noted that people aren't just begging for money these days - they are begging for food and clothes. Domestic workers in homes (helpers are we call them) have lost their jobs in droves because people do not want to be exposed to those using public transport or living in communities where Covid is spreading.
This is a global mess of epic proportions than cannot be solved by the pro privatization crowd.

(4,834 posts)Are they hard to get? Do they not amount to enough to feed anybody? Are they available for kids? How are they not working?
Can't believe in 2020 that private contributions are required to feed Americans at any point in time.

(31,528 posts)many years ago I depended on them to feed four kids and myself. I was quite frugal with them, cooked very inexpensive meals and bought no prepared food or junk food. I wasn't working at the time, so I had time to cook meals from scratch. If I planned carefully, I could usually make it stretch for the whole month, but the cupboards would be getting pretty bare.
For someone who didn't have the cooking skills or who works and has to rely on fixing quicker meals, it could be very difficult to make that amount stretch.
