After thinking about it for months, Robinson decided to get the boy, 11-year-old Elijah Maines, a new basketball and hoop -- the best her money could buy -- and had the hoop installed while the family wasn't home.
With her surprise gift she left a note: "Just wanted you and your son to have the best hoop that'll grow with him and all his friends," she wrote, signing it as "just one of the FedEx drivers in the area."
It was an instinctive act of kindness that led to a special friendship -- and memories that Elijah's family says will last a lifetime.
"It was crazy to me how happy he was with the bent up, broken hoop. Every time I saw him he was so joyful playing basketball. Seeing him so happy stuck with me," Robinson told CNN. "I just wouldn't stop thinking about it, I really wanted to get him a hoop. I was like, 'Is that weird?' But then I just said, you know what, he deserves it, I'm getting him a hoop."
After installing the hoop and leaving the note, Robinson didn't return to the neighborhood for weeks. She thought the family wouldn't realize it was her, she said, but she was more than satisfied to know in her heart she probably "made the kid's day."

"When Elijah came home and I showed it to him, he got really emotional. He got teary-eyed but he's an 11-year-old boy so he really didn't want to admit he was crying," she laughed. "He just sat there for 10 minutes staring at the ball until it really touched him that she went out of her way to do something just for him."

(569 posts)My neighbor did exactly the same thing for a single mother with four boys in our neighborhood...at midnight, 1:00 a.m. there were 12-15 boys playing basketball in the street.
The really heart warming story in our neighborhood was when the Krispy Kreme truck clipped the damn thing and refused to replace it.
My neighbor really regretted his act of kindness.

(2,458 posts)There's a time & place for EVERYTHING. Basketballs belong in playgrounds A good neighbor IS NOT a NOISE NUSISANCE. A good neighbor is also NOT one that has total disregard for others. I'm hearing...It's all about ME & what I want! So who cares if anyone is bothered by my noise...get USED TO IT! Get counseling or die but don't bother me or someone else about playing basketball! (277 posts)God help this little boy if he steps on your lawn. Maybe you can look into getting your trailer soundproofed. Leave the kid alone, okay? It doesn't look like he's got a lot of luxuries in his life so let him have this.

(68,753 posts)be deleted it was uncalled for. An older neighbor who used to come out and talk to us even shoot some baskets with us...gave me books of poetry Edna St Vincent Millay, Robert Frost etc. He was a wonderful man and told us stories of his childhood and really impacted the lives of many of us...I owe my lifelong interest in poetry/literature to him and my interest in history. He was a mensh and helped shape the next generation although he and his wife could not have children.

(146,343 posts)You inferred them from my defense of kids playing. I am a quiet neighbor who also can be annoyed by noises. However, I try to balance my desires against the needs and desires of others. It is good for children to play basketball and do other outdoor activities. So, I don't object when they make noise while doing things that benefit them.
People who can't stand typical neighborhood noises should live on large acreage lots or in seniors-only housing. Family neighborhoods have, you know, families living in them. Children play outdoors. Children make noise. It comes with the neighborhood.

(11,637 posts)It's other sounds that bother me, like parties going into the early morning, lawn mowers way too early on a weekend, and the odd asshole who decides to warm up their truck at 5:00 am while they were still inside having breakfast. I've lived near all of these.
