Letter to the editor: No transparency in vote counting
An article dated Sept. 16 in the Free Press quoted Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos as saying Election vote-counting in Vermont normally is a transparent process. In the view of our office, its public.
I would like to ask Mr. Condos, what part of our vote counting process is transparent? Our votes used to be counted in public view but now it is done by Diebold scanners. The actual vote counting is effectively done by the programmers at Diebold (now re-named Premier) and LHS who write the code on the machines and their memory cards. No one, not even Mr. Condos, is permitted to view this proprietary vote-counting software. Many independent studies have shown how easily the election results could be altered without us knowing, because the votes are effectively counted behind closed doors at these private companies. The unfortunate fact is that not a single aspect of our vote counting process is transparent. Mr. Condos is mistaken when he says it is transparent and public.
