Great Traditions in Journalism: The "Frankenstein Flash"

You know how people hold a flashlight under their chin when telling ghost stories? Stark under-lighting is scary looking.

Way back in the day, newspaper photographers had those cameras with the big round flash-bulb attachment on top.

When a criminal was being perp-walked, or when taking a candid of an unliked public figure, the photographer would "give 'em the frankenstein flash," meaning holding the camera upside down so the flash bulb would be below the level of the subject's face.

Fair and balanced!
