Yikes.
I saw a Afro-Cuban-American man drive a pickup truck in Sayreville today with a large Trump flag next to his Cuban flag.
He looked angry, 23-year old or younger, with a lot of tattoos, and a beard.
Castro is no longer in power.
Why are they still obsessed with "socialism"?
Did Batista do a number on them or what?

My Senator, Bob Menendez, is a white Cuban Democrat.
Ironically.

Curious that they're so young, yet have a "thick Cuban accent." So do you think they're recent arrivals?
NYCButterfinger
(755 posts)Yes.
Their car was near mine at the parking lot
I went in the store, they went in the store.
As I was shopping for butter, I heard them in their thick Cuban-American accent.

(51,308 posts)Why speak to one another in English? My Cuban friends, even those fluent in English, usually spoke to each other in Spanish. Quite a normal thing.
So these young people have grown up in the US, but speak with "thick" accents? Never saw that in Florida either.

(51,308 posts)I lived in Florida for years and knew plenty of Cubans. But just looking at a white woman would not clue me in as to whether she was of Cuban descent or not. Same with looking at a black man.
I have a hat with the Irish flag on it. No MAGA hats though. Wearing a hat with an Irish flag on it doesn't make me Irish.

(32 posts)I lived in Miami for years. Back at the time Elian Gonzalaz was returned to his father. Returning him to his father caused riots. Something that would never be questioned anywhere else if a child were returned to a surviving parent when their other parent died. His father had never been accused of abuse, nor any mistreatment.
The Cubans in Miami that left Cuba on nice, safe passenger jets or other perfectly nice and safe transports were the upper-class Cubans who had been in league directly or indirectly with the Batista government. The people who benefited from Batista being in power. They are the ones who became Republican supporters. They are not the Marielitos who came later, in the 80's. Who can be considered exiles.
They call themselves "exiles" even though Castro never formally exiled them. They gained favor with the hard-right of our nation because they were anti-Castro. Anti-communist. If Cuba had not been seen as a strategic island where the US should prevent the take hold of Communism within mere miles of the US border they would be nothing today. They would be like the Haitian immigrants. Poor and out of favor.
Instead, the US government propped them up and gave them money to oppose Castro and communism in Cuba.
The Cubans I met from this middle and upper-class tier were very proud of their Cuban heritage. As they should be. They were also blind to the fact the US is just as repressive a regime as any Castro regime. They all held a certain identity of being Cuban and being morally superior to Castro and his revolutionaries. I would expect the courtiers of Louis the XVI and Marie Antoinette who escaped the guillotine felt similarly. As if they were the poor persecuted exiles.
They naturally became part of the Republican party. It is the party of rich people. People who do favors, al la 'Batista, for one another.
We all know parents instill beliefs in their children. Both true and false. The Cubans who are part of the Republican party are the people who are more than happy to have theirs while others of their kind suffer. It's not about fairness with them. It is, like anyone in the GOP, about money and power.

I saw an elderly Latino woman at the store today purchasing kale.
She looked benign, over 70 or older, with a hair net and a mask.
Kale is no longer a hispter purchase.
Why would she still be buying kale?
What do you think we should make of that? Something tough and nonsense, maybe?

(588 posts)Most of those who left Cuba for Miami in 1959 were wealthy privileged people who had depended on the corruption of the Batista dictatorship for most of their wealth and income. When Castro came to power, there was a brief window of opportunity which allowed them to gather as much cash as they could and get out. They hated Castro because his overthrow of Batista had cost them their privileged position in society and much of their wealth.

(13,926 posts)Kids who were not even born are very emotional about the subject. What comes up many times is how that "democrat kennedy" ruined the bay of pigs invasion. That killed the over throw of Castro and taking back the island.. It's the Democrats fault... Also they are very much into business which is a bastion of Republicanism in Miami... Latin or not.. YMMV
