Almost daily we hear references to Trump refusing to leave office should he fail to win reelection this November.
Do we know how that might play out?
At some point shortly after the election the transition process begins.
For example, the Oval Office is completely stripped down and emptied including removing the rug down to the bare floor.
President elect Biden along with immediate staff members will start to receive intelligence and other briefings, meet with military leaders, meet with members of the intelligence community, and address Secret Service and other WH security issues.
A series of ongoing meetings will be scheduled between members of the Biden transition team and their opposite numbers in the WH.
Indeed, Trump will be expected to invite president elect Biden to meet with him at the WH.
Biden West Wing staff members will be issued their credentials, assigned to WH phone, email, and network access, and assigned to offices and theyll be moving into those offices come January 21, 2021, if not sooner.
The transition from one administration to another will be facilitated by Federal agencies with Federal workers in a robotic fashion, consistent with the law, policy, and over 200 years of tradition oblivious to a soon-to-be former president refusing to leave.
Last, plans will be underway for Bidens inauguration, with members of Congress, the judiciary, the Washington political establishment, and thousands of Americans in attendance.
Given all of this and more, what exactly are the mechanics of Trump refusing to leave?

After January 20th, Trump will not be President of the United States, and he will not be able to change that fact by refusing to acknowledge it.
Now, if course, I lack the means to stage a coup and install myself as dictator. Trump probably lacks the means, but we must anticipate that he might try it.

(45,806 posts)face time as he can. He'll try to stop any changes in the WH & stop any transition moves to his life & residence hat he can. As we get closer to 1/20/2021 & he hasn't won any suits he will secretly begin backing off. I don't believe he will ever get to the point when he's physically removed from the WH. THAT would hurt his ego way too much. He'll leave, but will fight for any aiar time he can scrape up to continue elling about how horrible he was treated.

(2,336 posts)If Biden wins, he will be escorted out of the White House as soon as Biden is sworn in. No big deal. Hope he's got his ticket to Russia in hand (though I'm sure Russia doesn't want him -- he's no longer of any use to Putin).

(12,286 posts)I keep seeing people say this but the people who would be tasked with escorting him out havent said they would.
You saying it doesnt mean they will do it.
Find a quote from a general or secret service captain that says we will immediately stop paying attention to Trump when Biden is sworn in.
Find that.
It doesnt exist.
I know thats how it SHOULD work.
Doesnt mean that he hasnt surrounded himself with loyal followers who will refuse to escort him anywhere.
You say he will be escorted out.
Prove it.

(32,017 posts)Assume Trump refuses to do any of the items on your action list. Assume he allows none of those things to be done. Then what?
Thats what some people are worried about.

(32,017 posts)That doesnt mean that Trump has to cooperate with anything on the OPs action-item list, however.

(21,550 posts)he can't refuse the leave the office because the law makes a person a president, not someone's words. otherwise i would simply declare myself the president and issue a trillion dollars in grants to figure out how to make a healthy boston cream donut.

(6,011 posts)The entire conversation is ridiculous.
If Trump loses, he leaves on inauguration day.
He doesn't get a choice, or a chance to debate anything about it.
"Leave now, or Federal Security will physically remove you by force, if necessary, Mr. Trump."
Tell me who would prevent this. Militia Monkeys? Senior Citizen "Bikers For Trump"? They don't have the stones, or the strength.
