The appointment of a new SC Justice may be one of those circumstances?
Perhaps the best we can do is grill the nominee as deeply as possible and get as much information from her as possible? Find out where she stands on the ACA, Social Security, Medicare, equal rights, etc.
If it is out of our control, then perhaps we should devote our focus on taking back the Senate. The best way to protect our country and our institutions is to have a Democratic House and Senate if Donald Trump is able to steal another election.
Is that the best hand for the Democrats?

(9,895 posts)Thomas will likely retire in the lame duck session after Trump loses to ensure that a semi-permanent 6-3 bloodless zealot majority is maintained...
The Senate is the WHOLE GAME - without it, even a huge House majority AND a Biden-Harris administration will get exactly squat done...
Without control of all 3 branches, the conservative agenda of repealing ACA, RvW, Medicare/Medicaid and SS are all going to become reality. They want "their country back" never meant the 1950's - they want back the 1850's and do not think for one second that they would hesitate to reinstate slavery if they saw any opening to doing so...like a return the Senate majority and a SCOTUS that could be made 7-2 in the future - ensuring that the ONLY way to combat this thwarting of the will of the majority of the citizens would be revolution and restarting with a new Constitution after a bloody second Civil War.
How dearly do we hold the ACA? RvW? Brown vs. Board? SS? Medicaid? Medicare? the 40-hour work week? EPA? OSHA? CDC? FDA?
They are all either endangered, already gone or compromised to the point of needing a tear down and rebuild.
Vote? Sure...always...but will it be counted? Are you SURE of that?
The time to fight these current fights is over if the Senate stays Red in November. If Trump steals another election and McConnell ekes out a 51-49 or even 50-50 Senate, the United States of America is RIP 1776-2020. Not even 0.01% hyperbole either...

(33,244 posts)They'll offer bland affirmations of their seriousness. That's all.
This is another kick in the teeth for Liberals and Democracy, just like Garland/Gorsuch was, and just like every lifetime appointment to the Federal bench that McConnell shoved through these last 3+ years.
There's no way to sugar coat it.

(18,969 posts)The Democratic Party went quietly on Merrick Garland because they were overconfident Hillary would win. That's where the massive mistake happened.
Nothing we can do now.

(8,010 posts)This is off the subject of your post, but are you a Kentucky resident? If so, I posted this the other night in response to this post from lastlib:
Has anybody seen any polling in KY Senate race since RBG passed?
Curious to know if there has been any movement toward McGrath.
My seething hatred for McTurdle wants to see his defeat almost as much as I want tRump's.
My response:
Some friends of mine and I were having this very conversation. Unfortunately, here's my take - No matter how much money, how much phone banking, how much knocking on doors, how much this, and how much that -is being done for Amy's campaign, I don't think it matters. And facts don't matter either because here are some (and you'd think they matter but apparently they don't)....
Kentucky is:
#44th in Healthcare
#44th in Education
#45th in Fiscal Stability
#47th in jobs
Kentucky demographics are:
87% White
8% Black
5% Other
I quite possibility despise Mitch McConnell more than I've EVER despised anyone in my entire life. I wish more than I could possibly express that I think McConnel could lose this race but I don't. Having said that, if the Dems take back the Senate, McConnel will lose the power in which he has abused in ways I couldn't have imagined...So that's something...

(111,052 posts)He wreaked havoc in the minority by blocking all the judge appointments of Obama, and other legislation.
He either has to be defeated or the filibuster rule will have to be changed.
Otherwise, nothing will change.

(14,565 posts)Moronic amount of money wasted on that race, amidst desperation and without a fleck of common sense.
It should have been $2 million wasted but I think it's closer to $50 million
Imagine all the House races that could have been funded with that money, including the nail biter near me involving Debbie Mucarsel-Powell

(8,010 posts)That was my sense. I had a friend (from here in CA) donate to Amy McGrath's campaign and then she called me. I told her I think her money is best sent elsewhere. The money, time, and effort need to be focused on the races that are in play....

(25,812 posts)call, write, and visit their offices in person, making it crystal clear that there needs to be no vote on a new Supreme Court Justice until at least after November 3. And after January 20, if Biden is elected.
DON"T just treat this as a done deal.
