Matt Bevin was the previous Governor of Kentucky. He was as right-wing as you could get. He had the support of Donald Trump. But, he barely lost to a Democrat. The people voted for Andy, son of former Governor, Steve Beshear. (Steve Beshear was one of the strongest proponents in the country for the ACA. (Obamacare) Why do you think they call it "Obamacare"?
How did Andy win?
He went down into the mountains of eastern and southeastern KY and talked with the people. He took just enough votes from Matt Bevin to win the Governorship. He has been a leader in the fight against the coronavirus. (This part of Kentucky is heavily Trump country)
Can McGrath get this strategy to work for her? Can she visit towns like Pikeville and Middlesboro and tell the people about what is at stake in the election. There are some people that may be voting without the information they need to make a wiser decision? Some people call them "low-information" voters.
The ACA was one of the greatest things to ever happen to many people in the mountains. They had insurance for the first time in their lives. Enough of them cared to vote for Andy and protect what they have fought for. Could this be an issue that Amy McGrath could use, also?

(262 posts)Well, The way I see this election popping back and forth mostly to MOSCOW MITCH THE SON OF A BITCH'S favor, Amy needs to do ANYTHING to break the grip of these lousy cheating republiCONS!! I just donated $5 which is my basic donation until my ss check arrives. I hope she does go to the back woods and drum up some support by bringing up the fact that MOSCOW MITCH THE SON OF A BITCH is a worthless POS!! She needs to HARP on the ACA and social security and medicare and medicaid. You just know some of those Kentuckiams rely on the ACA, Medicare and Medicaid. So, I say go for it Amy stretch your reach...

(111,052 posts)She needs to inform the folks that they are both under assault and they could lose both of them if there is another four years for Trump and McConnell. They are not being informed, in my opinion.

(13 posts)Bevin repeatedly attacked our teachers publicly and with violent rhetoric while trying to take away their pensions. The state mismanaged the pension funds for decades, then invested the money in black box funds to try to make up the shortfall, losing millions more. When teachers marched on the Capitol, he said in a news conference that by taking the day off work they were directly causing children to be molested and drugged. He tried to hide pension legislation at the end of a large sanitation bill. It was enough to enrage voters but he still only lost by the smallest margin possible. KY pulls a red ticket because of abortion, guns, and racism. The majority supports replacing Ginsburg ASAP for these reasons and they swallow whole Mitchs radical left rhetoric. Lastly, Amy isnt feminine enough to be likeable by the rednecks. We have very few blue dots in the college towns. Andy has lost a ton of support over the lockdown and mask mandates. These crazy people believe hes infringing on their rights and Mitch installed his little whitewashed unqualified protégée into the AG seat, who keeps pushing lawsuits against the executive orders to rile up Mitchs base. I hope to god Amy wins, but the better focus is on other senate races to remove him as majority leader. The DNC always knew she would lose, but backs her because shes an effective fundraiser. Most of her donations are from out of state.

(43,057 posts)Until the demographics of the state, and the psychological profiles of voting groups are detailed and understood, marketing political messages at such a monolith of 'abortion, guns, and racism' will be pretty futile. Second straight Senate election where McConnell faced a female.

(111,052 posts)The voter results between Bevin and Beshear from 2016 to 2018 showed that the Trump voters dropped in 2018 in the mountains of KY and that was the difference in the race. Those results did not show why it was different there from the rest of the state?
But, whatever the reasons, it was the fact that Trump voters decided to not vote for Bevin.

(34,336 posts)It's tragic. You would've thought they learned their lesson when they elected Bevin who ran on eliminating expanded Medicaid then they were all shocked when he tried to do just that. Duh. You can't fix stupid but, in this case, the entire planet is suffering from their horrific choices.

Beshear won because Bevin was massively unpopular in the state. McConnell is far more popular than Bevin. McGrath will not win.
If you are thinking of donating to McGrath's campaign, divert your funds to any of these states where the Senate race is far closer and Dems actually have a chance to win:
AK
AZ
CO
GA (either seat)
IA
KS
ME
MT
NC
SC
TX

(111,052 posts)I had read somewhere that his favorability rating was somewhere in the low 30's? Is that not correct?

(13,408 posts)Also, red states may occasionally elect a Dem to a state office; but they are much more resistant to electing a Dem to a federal office, especially one where the state would lose power/control/funding like they would by replacing the current Senate Majority Leader.

(94,355 posts)The last two polls were 53-31 and 52-37 for McConnell. Bevin was uniquely unpopular; McConnell is not. McGrath hasn't made a compelling argument against him, and isn't likely to in the last month of the campaign.
My analysis has us probably winning AZ, CO, NC and ME, and competitive in IA, AK, MT, GA and apparently SC. Not KY.

(27 posts)Hi,
The good news is that there are many senate races which are close in South Carolina , Iowa, Georgia and maybe Texas. The bad news is Kentucky is not a close race right now. I dont live in Kentucky but while McConnell is very unpopular , the McGrath campaign hasnt take advantage of that. If I am in Act Blue and trying to figure out where to allocate resources, South Carolina , Iowa Georgia and Texas. Dollars spent in those states could make a huge difference.

(9,958 posts)Kentuck mentions the mountains of eastern and southeastern Kentucky, mostly former coal mining areas and lots of poverty. Trump has not delivered on jobs for this area. Its an area where, with government incentives, alternative energy jobs such as solar panel manufacturing or batteries for electric cars could be located. These people also desperately need healthcare, and the two programs that provided access are the ACA and the Medicaid expansion. Also, rural hospitals have been closing at a fairly fast pace. Expansion of the ACA under Democrats would help reverse that trend. Too many of them were bought by private equity and then closed with profits were not high enough. Amy should find out which areas in Kentucky have had hospital closures and visit those communities and make the connection to the ACA. Also, she needs to make sure people know about the Trump case before the Supreme Court to eliminate the ACA, a case that McConnell fully supports. The ACA provided funds for the Medicaid expansion. Without those, thousands of Kentuckians will lose healthcare.
I remember reading an article a couple of months ago about the difficulties people were having in the areas around London, Kentucky, because of the pandemic. If she hasnt done so already, Amy should visit the areas hardest hit by the pandemic. Mitch is holding up another aid package, so he is not helping them. Also, an ad with Mitchs words about letting states declare bankruptcy instead of getting federal aid could help. How many teachers, fire fighters, and police will have to be laid off if the state has no money to operate? Mitch is on record for not wanting to prevent that.
