A bit before my time but the combination of the guests and the format were great.

He very carefully navigated the political waters by obviously being an adult i.e. liberal but was very careful and made everyone comfortable.
Not past tense either, my bad, hes still very much alive.

And he was a really good thoughtful interviewer during his heyday.
He also used to have a history show on HBO called Remember When that captivated me as a child.
