(111,051 posts)They cannot afford to gamble with their voters at this time.
They will want to wait and see how the wash comes out?

Trump is entirely transactional... if the horse gets the carrot before the election.... why does the religious right need to vote for him?
He would have delivered their ultimate objective and they would no longer have to vote against the best interests to achieve the court.

(2,770 posts)nominee must be met at their next reelection bid with an unprecedented wave of opposing money and volunteers. We should start an organization a la Indivisible to thwart them. This isnt petty. This is about our democracy and our Constitution and defending them.

(7,429 posts)Even if Biden wins, McConnell and Trump have over two months to stir the pot. It's over 75 days between November 4 and January 20.
Assume nothing.

The new Congress has to be formed before the inauguration of the president because they ratify and count the electoral college votes submitted by each state.

(443 posts)Winning isnt enough. We need a landslide. This is going to be rocket fuel for Dem turnout. Any move they make after that will be seen as illegitimate giving Democrats political cover to pack the courts

(14,272 posts)We've seen them do things like that in Wisconsin and a few other states. The playbook was already written by the Russians and executed on the state level as a run up to the possibility of them losing power at the national level.

(16,616 posts)At least we can focus on the election, and with so much at stake, it could help mobilize people, hopefully more of ours than theirs.
Just psychologically, ramming a justice through now would be so distracting and crippling.
Also, a lame-duck confirmation is just an unprecedented disgrace, and maybe we can undo it assuming we win. Or maybe post-election some of the GOP will lose the will to fight so hard.
We have to get the job done, as RBG advised.

(11,513 posts)The big prize for GOPers is absolute control of the Supreme Court, all norms or rules (even Moscow Mitch's own made-up rules) be damned. They'll gladly take the heat for a few weeks if it means capturing the Supreme Court.
And what's even worse is that they'll spend precious time on this rather than doing anything to help Americans through the pandemic.

(25,111 posts)they are trying to steal the election again across board. We must come out and vote bigly.

(46,676 posts)They can still go scorched earth if they lose badly. But they will have to start now, which means that they will lose many of their Senate races. It's a crap shoot.

(3,166 posts)And I'm pretty sure this has never happened in this country's history: a defeated president nominates a Supreme Court justice who is then confirmed by Senators who have also lost their elections. I can't wrap my head around that scenario.

(407 posts)With human suits that don't fit properly. I'm not one to disparage the appearance of others, but with all the money and resources at their disposal I don't understand why they look so damned creepy. Especially dRumpf with his tendency for narcissistic self-exposure. Can he possibly look in a mirror and think, 'that looks good.'?
Probably a dumb question. Obviously yes.

(14,887 posts)mirror and sees his 40 yr old self. He talks about seniors as if he isn't one. He is 74, obese, has a lousy diet, thinks exercise shortens his life and is getting increasingly paranoid. He thinks he has 12 years to be president? If he is this unhinged at 74, he'll be drooling in a corner by 86, if he lives that long!

(14,887 posts)days but I do not trust king con or moscow mitch. They will do anything to stay in power. I don't trust this announcement 'from the White House'. Lying sneaky bastards. You can bet they are working non-stop to find a way to get a nominee in Ruth Ginsberg's seat.

(8,670 posts)Trump loses. Appoints a fool like Cotton, Cruz or god forbid Barr, and after Jan 2021 he gets convicted of all his shit during presidency, can his appointee be recalled?
What a shithole country. The biggest lying criminal in the country steals presidency, appoints a criminal hack like Barr to head all law enforcement, and appoints 3 justices for life, during four years of criminality. A joke to the entire world. A disgraceful ignorant nation. Yet we want to invade countries and bring them our democracy.
Murdock, you win. You fucked another country. All that money will not go with you to hell, unless it is used to stoke the flames.

(2,663 posts)even during a lame duck session, just said NO I won't vote on a new SC judge until our new president is sworn in. That MIGHT show that the repub party had a little integrity, they don't and they WON"T do it, but they should.

(12,563 posts)can be made before the election.Ted Cruz wasn't even subtle about it. He wants the seat filled by Friday -- with himself, of course.
The Repugs needed be not concerned. They still have their majority on the SCOTUS. They just want a permanent unbreakable majority for the next 30-40 years. We are so fucked as a country. All progressive programs will be eliminated (did you see how easy it was to destroy the Voting Rights Act?) and all their worst angels will be flying everywhere. We'll be a Christian nation, starting each day with a reading from the Bible and the Lord's prayer. In fact, that's the way it was when I attended Robert E.Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama, in the mid-60s. We didn't go so far as to have classes on American patriotism jammed down our throats.
Remember how loudly they screamed that any replacement for Scalia had to share his judicial philosophy? Yeah, that went the way of "No appointment until after the election."
If Trump wins, we're leaving the country. I'm 71 and I don't want to spend my "Golden Years" watching my country literally be destroyed by the worst people in the world.
