Washington PostWant to make sure your ballot counts? Track it online like a UPS delivery.
Thats now possible across much of America, in part because of the coronavirus pandemic.
I dont often get emails from my state government, so I was curious about one recently asking me to check out Californias new election website, Wheres My Ballot. There, I typed in my name, birthday and Zip code and a minute later, I had signed up for personalized voting updates. Now Ill get a text when my ballot is in the mail, as its on its way back to election officials and, eventually, counted.
Help Desk: Ask our tech columnist a question
I did a double take: For once, theres a new use for technology that might build confidence in our democracy, rather than tear it down.
Turns out, California isnt alone. Gearing up for the largest vote-by-mail election in American history, a patchwork of local officials in all but about seven states have invested in some form of ballot-tracking tech. It will be available in the District of Columbia, most of Virginia, Maryland, Colorado and North Carolina and parts of Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon and South Carolina, just to name a few. To find out if youve got access where you vote, check out The Washington Posts handy interactive guide to voting in 2020.

(13,821 posts)3. My county in Florida has tracking. The ballot envelope has a bar code...I tested it out
The last local election. Filled it out and signed the outside of the ballot per instructions. You have to sign over the flap so it shows right away if it was tampered with..I then DROVE 20 min down to the Supervisor if Elections building.. Where they actually count the vote.
A person showed me where to put the ballot after checking that I signed the ballot. The next day I went to the web site, put in my info......Lo and behold it stated that my ballot was received. Over the course of a few days I watched it pass thru the system till it said MY VOTE WAS COUNTED!! Yahoo the system worked as planned.
Lets hope it works Nov 3rd...
