Early signs the bottom might be falling out on Trump in 2020, just as it did for McCain this same week in 2008
But there is one exception to the recent rule: Barack Obamas landslide victory in 2008. In November, Obama stomped all over Republican John McCain. Obama took 68 percent of Electoral College votes by winning states like Indiana and Virginia that no Democrat had won since 1964.
For most of that year, the 2008 presidential campaign didnt feel like a landslide at all. Indeed, in early September national polling from reputable outlets like the Associated Press, CBS News, and ABC News all had McCain ahead of Obama. A USA Today/Gallup poll had McCain up 10 points on Labor Day weekend.
But shortly after, the bottom fell out on McCain.

(22,281 posts)The GOP base doesn't care about true competence. They just want to hear Trump say he's competent, that's all they need to be happy and support him.

(24,355 posts)with a sizable number of them defecting to Biden, a Democrat, which seems unthinkable for a sitting President any other year in recent history. A lot of Republicans weren't crazy about Trump in 2016 either and some left him after the Acess Hollywood Tape- but then some came back towards the end because (I guess) they just couldn't bring themselves to vote for HRC.

(54,056 posts)As I recall it, the primary battle between Clinton and Obama was so bitterly fought precisely because everyone knew that the winner of the Democratic primaries was going to be the next president.

For an incumbent to be flailing this badly in the polls is a VERY bad sign for him.
This does NOT mean we don't need to work hard to GOTV and fight voter suppression, of course. I just think there's reason for hope and optimism, and we really do need some of that right now.
