I'm just southwest of Bonney Lake, WA. They have named it the Sumner Grade fire.

I need to pack up and go up to my daughter's house before noon today when the wind is expected to pick up, as it is headed in my direction. I'll take my laptop with me so that I can keep up with the news. I hope I can get my cat into the cat carrier. Wish me luck!

(4,292 posts)Entice him into a small bathroom, with the carrier well hidden in the tub, and shut the door. If you have to, get him into a pillowcase first.
Edit from somebody else: Make sure you put this in the carrier first: a T-shirt that smells like you!

(16,373 posts)It sounds bad but it calms them down.

(4,292 posts)Once in the carrier, they can get out of the pillowcase easily, and then it becomes extra cushioning.

(7,769 posts)...we have been evacuated 4 out of the last 5 years.
When they say get out...get out.
People who don't leave put firefighter's lives at risk as well as their own.
You can always replace stuff...

(15,803 posts)Hope your home is passed over by the fire. Travel safe!
When I have to load the cat in the carrier, I set the carrier on the floor with the door facing up. I immobilize her with a hand on her scruff (but dont life her from that hand) and then use my other hand to lift her up and put her feet first in. Works every time because she cant see where shes going.

I live in e. Washington and have seen my share of wildfires - including losing our home!
Remind me, trailrider - do you have horses? I do, and as you can imagine, they force me to leave early! Although right now, staying put is likely my best bet, and our plan. Truly, the forest around our place has burned so much, not much fuel left!
I'm in Chelan Co. So far, out of range of the raging fires.
Stay safe!

(3,334 posts)Wanting the winds to die down and for rain, which might be coming on Monday. Ive never been through something like this before in Oregon. It literally is a perfect storm of events to create this situation.

(7,911 posts)Evacuation zone is now less than 2 miles from my house. But It doesn't look like it will come this way.

(261 posts)She lives on 166th right next to the Winco, which is the staging area for the fire and police. The trees at Winco are totally torched. My son-in-law is super stubborn and did not evacuate. They did pack both cars and were ready to leave, but he spent the first night watering the trees and house, etc. Last night was very scary, too. My daughter and our 11-year-old grandson are total basket cases now. All I can say, is that the firefighters are doing a tremendous job. Stay safe, and I hope your home is still standing when you return.

(3,413 posts)She is up the hill about 2 miles from me. Good news on the fire front. There are 3 blackhawk helicopters from the WA national guard flying and dropping water on the fire. Also, the winds have relented somewhat and they hope to contain the fire tomorrow. The Bonney Lake community has provided food and water for the first responders, as well as evacuees from the community that need a meal or water. Current news can be found here:

I am SO glad to be here, rather than some hotel room. Mary has cooked up some vegetarian chili with all the fixins, and her hospitality can't be beat. I sit here with a nice bourbon and water over ice, hoping my house is spared the horrific damage that some of my neighbors' homes have sustained. This particular area is very populated, and the threat to life and property is so scary.
You all stay safe, and please send us, as well as our friends in Oregon and California your best wishes and prayers. We really need them.
Love,
Sandy
