Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez described his experience with covid-19 as feeling like I was 100 years old. Now, the 27-year-old left-hander will miss the 2020 season while recovering from a heart issue related to the illness.
Rodriguez, who tested positive for the coronavirus July 7, was ready to return July 18, but, five days later, an MRI revealed what turned out to be myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart that has been shown to be a complication of a virus that can affect the kidneys and heart as well as the lungs.
The heart is the most important part of your body, so when you hear that the first time that I heard it I was kind of scared, Rodriguez said (via Mass Live) July 26. Now that I know what it is, its still scary, but now I know exactly what it is. Just talk to my mom, talk to my wife, they know what I have and everything. Now we just gotta take the rest. Thats hard, but you gotta take a rest.''
Heres one of the best pitchers in the game last year and hes not able to perform on the field, Red Sox Manager Ron Roenicke said (via the AP). Youre more at risk when youre older, but it hits the young pretty hard, too, at times. And Eddie just, unfortunately, is one of those guys that it hit hard, and to get to lose an entire season, its pretty rough on anybody.

(31,261 posts)One site has something like 100,000-200,000 visitors. People are reporting all type of post recovery symptoms, from lung to heart to kidney to inflammation to brain issues. Their Doctors were initially skeptical because tests were not showing issues, but more and more Doctors are said to be showing a new awareness of COVID19 after effects.
And the study out of Germany showed this pattern for relatively young people even with very mild cases. That someone from his team would try to explain that it usually hits older people...I guess they aren't staying up to date on the science.

(83,637 posts)It will keep eating at you, most likely for the rest of your life, however long that will be.
No one will ever be the same again and this will cause the next healthcare crisis, preexisting conditions. It won't just be about your heart. Your kidneys, liver and brain are in jeopardy.

(83,637 posts)Good for the principal. Not sure what the schools are doing here yet. My nephew is a teacher and I have four great nieces and Nephews that may be sent back. They are ages 4-14. Last I heard the schools are buying them tablets. So it may well be a school from home for a while.

(22,338 posts)I bet a lot of young people who think they recovered will find themselves with crippling heart or lung problems decades later.
This happened to polio survivors. Shingles from chicken pox is another example.
We may be facing a generation of people on long term disability from Covid.

(43,027 posts)COVID is a whopper.
Other diseases have long term complications too. Cancer, celiac disease, chronic fatigue, toxicities of various types, allergies and inflammation, IBS, Crohn's, pancreatitis - you get the idea.
I'd bet the aftermath of covid is related to immunity, perhaps overactive, and the stressed organs. Might shut down over time - long or short - or be something else.
We are so screwed.
