(33,483 posts)might get a Biden/Demmings ticket some extra Home State votes.
Thereby swinging FL in a close vote.

(46,684 posts)In Florida people are going to remain skeptical. For example, her hubby, Jerry Demmings, Mayor or Orlando, ran to open up businesses too early. Which suggests that he's that kind of Democrat. The one that goes along to get along with Republicans in this State. That's very typical of Central Florida politicians.
Val Demmings has always impressed me because seems very independent-minded. But, there are so many qualified candidates.

(33,483 posts)Just explaing the thinking behind it.
There is a certain Home State bump. But I wouldn't know if she would get enough to secure FL.
I am sure there are some internal polls that have some data.

(7,447 posts)Just being from somewhere doesn't guarantee much at all.
I just see people pushing for her because it somehow gives us Florida and I see zero evidence that's true.

There is some.
But I don't know why you are arguing. I explained the thought behind it, not that it will work.
That is why it is far from a sure thing.

(7,447 posts)which is already basically a blue state now.
And he was the Governor, not a representative of a single district.

(33,483 posts)You wanting to know the thinking behind Demmings.
It was explained. No one is saying it is sure to happen.
No one is telling you you are wrong to say she won't help Biden win FL.
You were just told the case that would be made for Demmings.
Responding is not arguing and no one is forcing you to reply.

(6,143 posts)She might help more than any of the other contenders who come from other states. My concern is will her police career work as a positive or negative.

(6,907 posts)She also has been a social worker. A fairly unique combination, police chief and social worker
I didnt know that.

(3,289 posts)when it comes to our potential nominees for Vice President. I also think any one of them would represent our country well and be of great help to a President Biden.

(10,053 posts)While many feel that a veep will not make a difference in carrying a whole state - she might be able to carry an essential region (I-4 Corridor encompasses six counties) that we really really need. I am from South FL where we are blue - but the rest of the state only has pockets of blue and possibilities of blue, we need to get that I-4 area to give us those 29 electoral votes. The only states that have more electoral votes than Florida are TX and CA , so this is a must win.
To win in Florida, youve got to win the I-4 Corridor, Dyer said. Having Val on the ticket would give Biden a lot better chance in Florida. Not that he cant win Florida without her, but I think Val would certainly energize the entire I-4 Corridor, would energize the entire African-American community to turn out, if nothing more than to turn out for her.

(25,952 posts)As much as I admire Val Demmings and as much as she rocked during the impeachment hearings, she's not my top pick mainly for that reason. But I'm not picking, Joe is. He has a great roster to choose from and I'll 100% support the VP candidate he wants.

And if she is selected by VP Biden I would happily vote for that ticket. That said, she is a second term Congresswoman with her main experience running a big city police department. Maybe rebuilding the reputation of Homeland Security if not VP.

(5,268 posts)She shares authenticity and moderate positions with Joe. Crime rate reportedly fell 40% during her tenure as police chief which helps blunt criticism over cases of excessive force with insufficient punishment of officers.
I admire her life story coming from extremely humble background, not privilege which gives her unique perspective.

She would be my choice after Rice

(11,613 posts)She undoubtedly has a unique and well informed perspective on police departments and potential reform.. but how much of an actual reformer she has been in her career seems debatable. She has been accused of standing by police officers who were ultimately judged to have performed some abusive actions when she was chief of police.

She is a great speaker however who turned a lot of heads in the impeachment proceedings. She would perhaps undercut the Trump campaigns law and order joe supports anarchy message. To me shes right there with Harris but her location in Florida probably makes her more geographically valuable to a ticket.

(29,322 posts)Don't let Trump define the terms of the debate. All these nationwide protests are not asking for "law & order". NBA players aren't wearing "Law & Order" on the back of their jerseys. I want the protestors to vote for the Democrats.
