Even tho I know from years of experience most people will scoff and will say I am a Cassandra.
When rumors of the secret arrests started spreading, few were alarmed. Maybe unidentified security forces were grabbing young people off the streets and shoving them into unmarked carswho could say. But they must have had a good reason. Those arrested must have been terrorists, or at least radical leftist troublemakers. The government said it was legal.
And anyway, those arrested wouldnt be gone forever, people figured. It wasnt like a person could just disappear.
Snip:
Between 1976 and 1983, somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 Argentinians, as well as a smaller number of foreigners, were kidnapped, tortured, and killed by government agents.
Many of those hustled off the streets and into Ford Falcons at gunpoint were taken to secret government prisons.
Snip:
The few actual leftist revolutionaries were effectively wiped out in the first year of the campaign. Most of those killed by the regime were students, labor unionists, writers, journalists, and other ordinary citizens who had asked too many questions about where their children and neighbors had gone. Officials lied and made jokes; they told distraught parents their children must be on vacation. The leader of the junta, Gen. Jorge Videla said: The disappeared are just that: disappeared. They are neither alive nor dead. They are disappeared.
Snip: The junta called it la guerra sucia, the Dirty War, to give it a patina of military legitimacy. But it wasnt a war. It was one-sided terrorism by a state against its citizens, aimed at crushing political opposition and dissent.

Now reports in from New York City that people are being snatched by those same anonymous guys and black vans.....
this is a test run to check resistance..it's happened in 2 states now.
Notice that trump and his troops call protestors " terrorists" and now "antifa", a group that does not actually exist, but right wingers believe it does, so they support this subversion of the Constitution, because trump hugged a flag so he must be a patriot...or chosen one, etc.
2-3 months ago no one would have imagined this happening in America. 2nd world countries, yeah, but HERE? Naw....
But HERE, people HAVE been disappeared.
Just because they are Hispanics doesn't make it "different"
Remember what happened when lawyers and supporters tried to find people in camps? ICE moved them.
Does anyone know it is the Federal Marshalls who control which sites/prisons that immigrants are thrown in?
Know how many of those prisons are For-Profit?
See the picture?

(269,269 posts)I do think that US institutions are stronger. US and Western powers backed military dictatorships in South America and Latin America. Authoritarian leaders (generals or backed by generals) destroyed or weakened civil society and crushed anyone in the way.

(12,712 posts)Those activities are against the Constitution. We know that Trump does not respect it.
If we cut to the chase, doesn't this come down to the military in an end game in order to end the siege, so to speak? The real question would be how truly patriotic the military is and if they would side with Trump or the people and the laws of the land.

Since COVID the group has been doing these programs on line. This program was great and had a ton of video from Portland. Here is what was posted for this program

(94,934 posts)This is NOT Argentina. We do not have the centralized governing structure of Argentina. We do not have a military prepared to engage in domestic law enforcement (one of the reasons DHS was sent in).
I've LIVED in a Dictatorship. This isn't one. It isn't close to being one.
