A 1% drop in GDP is a recession. We called a 6.5% drop in GDP "The Great Recession". In 1929, we called a 15% drop in GDP "The Great Depression". What the fuck do we call a 33% drop in GDP?

(3,055 posts)And it is not only an economic and a lost jobs issue, it is depression in the mental health sense. Is anyone really happy and not stressed by this situation with the disease, the economy, job loss, limitations of personal freedom and so many lost opportunities and missed experiences? And all compounded by the lack of empathy and meaningful leadership at the Federal level. The needless deaths and illness from Covid are tragic, but the impact to society goes far beyond the families of the victims. Increasingly, we are all becoming victims and the consequences will linger long beyond when we finally get the disease under control.

(58,785 posts)It represents millions in severe economic difficulties, many suddenly facing destitution who never thought it could happen to them. After all, $600 a week doesn't allow keeping up with the bills when normal "middle class" living on the median two-earner income (59K-89K by race) cuts pretty close to the edge.
Saw one report that 73% of Americans say they didn't have savings to cover 3 months' expenses, but it didn't mention how many were cleaned out after 1 month.

(35,387 posts)You need economic downturn of sufficient length for it to be a depression. 3-4 months isn't "sufficient length."
