July 27, 2020 at 2:24 p.m. CDT
To strengthen federal forces arrayed around the citys downtown courthouse, the U.S. Marshals Service decided last week to send 100 deputy U.S. Marshals to Portland, according to an internal Marshals email reviewed by The Post. The personnel began arriving Thursday night, the email says.
The Department of Homeland Security is also considering a plan to send an additional 50 U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel to the city, but a final decision on the deployment has not been made, according to senior administration officials involved in the federal response who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal deliberations.
Such moves would mark a significant expansion of the federal force operating at the courthouse there were 114 federal agents there in mid-July though it is unclear how many personnel there now would be relieved and sent home once the reinforcements arrive.

(16,616 posts)I just read an article that said it was CBP and made no mention of the Marshals.
This is depressing.

(15,805 posts)He can't increase his militaristic showdown without also producing more violent actions against the protesters. Given his past statements, Trump has already ordered his goons to rough up the civilians and bloody the press corps and the legal observers.
These protesters are at grave risk. It's only a matter of time before one of those federal troops does something stupid.

(31,131 posts)he can do something illegal to interfere with the election, somehow.
Or make the 12th amendment come into play somehow
But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice.

(12,601 posts)It's like when the Bush administration said we should be afraid of Saddam Hussein because of "chemical, biological and nuclear weapons," knowing that the only word people would pay attention to was "nuclear."
In Portland, there are thousands of peaceful protesters (who Trump calls "terrorists" ), and very few people who fall in the latter two categories. But by lumping the three groups together Fat Donnie has his justification for sending in more federal troops.

(15,265 posts)this federal building that is the the now focal point of this mess, and if the fence at that building wasn't stormed every night for ~50 fifty nights. We wouldn't have illegal assemblies declared night after night or federal troops brought in.
