t least one person was killed in downtown Austin on Saturday night in the midst of a protest, and medics are searching for additional victims, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.
The shooting happened around 9:50 p.m. at Sixth Street and Congress Avenue, and the public should avoid the area, EMS officials said. Callers reported that multiple people were injured, EMS officials said.
Medics said they were performing CPR on the individual. Police later posted on Twitter that they were treating the incident as a homicide.
The person who was shot was taken to the hospital, EMS officials said.
A protester, who filmed the scene via Facebook Live, said someone charged into the crowd and shot some of the protesters.
According to the protesters video hours into the Black Lives Matter march, car honking could be heard before at least five gunshots were unleashed. Several screaming protesters immediately took cover.
Austin police officials said they will update the public in the near future.

(25,762 posts)I don't know what happened. I see them approach an intersection and some protesters turn their heads to the left because they are distracted by something they see. Then there appears to be chaos and gunshots coming from where the protesters were looking. It happened real fast, but there may have been a brief altercation before shots were fired.
I'm reading some comments on the FB Live video. Someone with the BLM protesters was carrying a rifle. There was some altercation at an intersection. (Sounds like the guy in a car was annoyed that protesters were in the intersection) Guy gets out of the car and shoots the guy carrying the rifle with a pistol... Who knows if this is true.....

How about some more specific information on who "someone" is? The caliber of the slug(s) would be a good start in finding out.

(25,762 posts)The protesters where crossing an intersection and the traffic was stopped at a red light. I hear a bunch of honking and people look in the direction, then I hear shots. Someone said there were two guns involved and that the protester was carrying a rifle himself and the guy from the car shot him with a handgun.

I saw the pictures of the protester carrying a rifle. Did the person in the car freak out when he saw the rifle? Very sad. Too many guns.
Protester's wife is in a wheelchair. I'm seeing her now on FB Live, she's out with the protesters and they're comforting her.
The guy killed was white, large frame, carrying a rifle. Several other guys with him are carrying rifles. They are also white. To be honest if I was in the car and saw guys carrying rifles, I would probably freak out. You can't tell that they're BLM protesters, unless you are familiar with the group.

(9,090 posts)say how inconvenienced they are that the protestors are blocking roads they need to ride on.

(25,762 posts)The victim was interviewed earlier and says he carries mainly because of issues with traffic and his right to protest. (I'm sure Austin has a permit-less free speech ordinance. San Antonio does...but legalities have ongoing for years)

Snip....
There were people around the car, yelling, and people sounding like they were frightened, Capochiano said.
A protester with a rifle approached the car, and the driver pointed his own gun outside the window, Capochiano said. The driver fired several shots, then sped away, he said.
The man with the rifle dropped to the ground when he got shot, Capochiano said.
