Congress is barreling toward a showdown over federal unemployment benefits, with millions of Americans hanging in the balance.
As part of the March $2.2 trillion coronavirus bill, Congress agreed to a $600-per week plus-up of unemployment benefits, but those are set to start expiring in a matter of days.
What to replace it with is shaping up to be a clash as lawmakers and the White House prepare to negotiate the fifth coronavirus bill.
"What's going to happen on Saturday, all the pain, all the suffering ... did not have to happen," Sen. Ron Wyden (Ore.), the top Democrat on the Finance Committee, said of the looming deadline.

(13,437 posts)America will start feeling the pain next week. Congress will need at least 1-2 more weeks to hash out some of deal and then once Mr. Photo Op signs it, states will need time to implement it. It may well be late August or September before additional help arrives, if something does pass Congress. We're looking at a month of 1930s era Depression misery ahead of us, if not more.
Make no mistake. The unemployment payments which Republican scumbags like Graham and others have decried are pretty much the only things keeping the economy alive while it is in the ICU.

Do not cave,do not agree with bullshit sociopaths . And for fucks sake do not be passive. You are fighting for people's survival. No time for passivity. Or fairness as republicans define it.

Trump is still trying to run on the economy, no 600 a month no economy that was the one thing pressurizing middle class income in the US.
This is going to get worse before it gets better

(997 posts)That should get the talks started,
That $600 a week is one of the main things that is keeping the economy going.

(8,351 posts)Dems need to give back pay for all the months lost if they get control in January on the first day. Also an indefinite UBI immediately. That should help offset all the economic damage the repugs intentionally make in their lame duck session.
