2. Yes, that's how the March of Dimes came to be

Don't forget, the dimes back then were about 90% silver. The price of silver today is $22.62 per ounce. A dime is 1/10 of a dollar, so a dime back then is worth 22.62/10 *.90, equal to about $2.04 in today's dollars. Times 2,680,000 equals $5,455,944 in contribution from ordinary citizens.

3. Bit later there was an annual Mothers March for dimes. Moms went door to door collecting

People who wanted to donate turned on their porch lights.

I remember going with my mom a few times. As I recall, we didn't have to walk very far because so many volunteered to collect. Each woman was assigned a specific area to cover.

We were proud to help. Polio was extremely frightening!

4. I don't remember the date of the annual Mothers March. Jan 30, FDR's birthdate?

That seems right. I was born in January too, so I would have felt proud to be marching with my mom for such a good cause near MY birthday (1940)
