Whatever his shortcomings are ... I sure can't see them.

frazzled
(18,402 posts)at the house of a board member for the public institution at which my husband worked (we were newcomers, and thus invited to get acquainted). The spouse of another employee was discreetly filling us in on who was who in the room, and at one point said: "See that older gentleman in the rumpled old plaid jacket and the scuffed-up shoes?" We saw him. "Well, that's XX (the owner of a distinguished chain of department stores and a noted art collector). You have to be that rich to get away with looking so bad," he quipped.
It's true. A lot of very wealthy people of that generation (and even Mitch's) drive old cars and dress down, because they don't want to "look" wealthy. Or sometimes because they just don't give a damn about it.
With McConnell, I think it's mainly that there's no way of making him look good, no matter how good the tailor.

(15,187 posts)Just don't spend money easily. My parents were certainly not wealthy, but you would have thought they were very poor in the way they handled their cash.

(112,585 posts)but we should keep in mind that he did have polio when he was a young child so his legs were undersized and he has difficulty climbing stairs. It's probably not a good idea to poke fun of anyone's disability.

(19,204 posts)That suit might have fit Turtle-man 25 lbs. and 30 years ago, but it isn't doing much for him now. That suit isn't "off the rack", it's from "under the rock". I wouldn't be buried in a suit that looked like that!

(50,572 posts)When I did Permanent Change of Station moves in the Army, I always carried my dress greens stuffed into my duffel bag. When I got where I was going, I immediately took the greens to the base dry cleaners and had them cleaned and pressed so they'd be fresh for my new command.
Mitch's suit looks worse than my greens did the second I took them out of the bag.
