The Department of International Trade in the UK has been bounced into conducting a review of export licenses for the producers of riot kit purchased by police forces in America!!! Someone here has threatened legal action to stop the export of items such as rubber bullets and tear gas as they are now being used as tools of repression by the police against BLM. Based on the threat of legal action the Department said the Government takes its export responsibilities seriously and assesses all export licences in accordance with strict licensing criteria. We will not issue any export licences where to do so would be inconsistent with these criteria. It remains to be seen how far this will go, but the last time licences for such items were revoked were for supplying the Hong Kong police. If they apply the same criteria to the US (and they really should) then this should mean that the UK government will soon very clearly state that they will not support the actions of the US government in the suppression of its people (which of course they won't), and when they don't the courts will decide if the government here is applying their licence criteria correctly... Interesting times!
