(53,410 posts)on the part of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Evangelical Christian leaders, and the Republican Party to feed the American people one of the longest standing misinformation propaganda ever. Its been going on since Reagan. Its a miracle that only 49% of White people have abandoned all critical thinking to believe this.
Just because you and I were busy using our Critical thinking and common sense discriminatory abilities doesnt mean it wasnt working on some people.

(58,785 posts)the white majority above all to change voting behaviors. Yes, they target AA, mostly their men, with some success, and have made real advances recently among Hispanic conservatives, again especially males, but not entirely.
OneCA, if you want to despise all of some group, how about abandoning race as the focus of hostility and instead targeting all men of all colors ? Men are more prone to bigotry and aggressive antagonism than women, and I promise you that the kind of black and brown men who despise white men and women of all colors are just as ugly as their white fellows.
(Sorry, guys who don't think you deserve this, but bigoted as misandry is, at least it isn't racism.

(52,129 posts)Well, power of brainwashing and denial. There's enough bigotry in the media, notably foxnews and hate radio, to reinforce their increasingly bizarre worldview.
It's really hard to break out of a twisted worldview, and especially hard when there's still constant reinforcement of it. This is why they refuse to watch anything other than fox news. It's reassuring for them.
This is why donnie needs to be crushed in November. Nothing but a complete humiliation has even a chance of breaking through. Long term, though, we need a better answer to foxnews. Not just a left wing version. More like constantly dismissing it as crackpot fringe nonsense. Big mistake to have ever treated it as an actual news source.

No, of course they (we) aren't.
There are extremes in each party, but as Rep. John Lewis (I'm guessing you've heard of him) once said -
"We are one people with one family. We all live in the same house... and through books, through information, we must find a way to say to people that we must lay down the burden of hate. For hate is too heavy a burden to bear."

If so, please don't leave.
I've been here for many years as well - leaving periodically when it gets to be too much. People have always been snippy (even as far back as 2004 when I first came across the site) but there's been a steady march over the years to actually become the caricature that the Right accuses us of being.
Without voices to push back when things veer too far then there will come a day when DU will simply become a place where group think and knee-jerk reaction rule the day, and as DU is probably the best site to discuss issues with like-minded fellow travelers, that would be a sad day indeed.
In essence, do what you have to do but your presence will be missed.

I live in a small town in Iowa.
I am surrounded by redneck assholes who are monumentally stupid.
Most of them have lived here since birth and seldom even leave the state.
After 19 years in this town we're still "new people", because we don't have great-grandparents who grew up here...we get some new families once in a while, even some Black families. They leave in less than a year. I know this because I'm usually the one who sits by the moms at school concerts and other school events, since I'm an outcast as well.
There are liberals here, but they are afraid to speak up.
I have evangelical relatives in Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida, and S. Carolina. ALL of them are right wing tools.
I want to move somewhere more diverse simply so I don't feel like I'm screaming into the void all the time.

What the hell is wrong with white people is a perfectly reasonable question. They came to this continent and by accident or on purpose pretty much wiped out the native populations, then broke every treaty with the remaining people. Cut down the trees, plowed up the prairies, killed the buffalo. Kidnapped Africans and thought that, even though they were Christians, it was perfectly fine to own people. Thought it was fine to give American citizens a few days to dispose of all their property and throw them into internment camps for years. They turned food into tasteless chemical garbage that makes people obese and sick. Turned everything into an advertisement, us into consumers, turned news into entertainment. Turned the Republican Party, formerly the country club party, into a radical religious nutbag party; an insane moron drug addict like Trump is sort of the perfect ending.
It's a bummer, but it's just a generalization. No need to take it personally. I make my own Ranch with yogurt.

(14,853 posts)I'm white, and I used to have a white friend / coworker who often sent me links to attacks of white men by African Americans -- e.g., the "knockout game".
It didn't affect me because I know it's not the norm, and it's possible to demonize just about anyone or anything with a concerted effort. For example, I could post videos of dogs that attack people or only the stories of them mauling people. I have no desire to do that, but the obvious goal of such behavior would be to steer the audience toward a particular narrative that doesn't represent dogs as a whole.
The Russians are probably playing a role in racial strife too.
Edit:
And algorithms of the internet often keep people in extremist bubbles too. A person who searches for attacks on white men will tend to get MORE links to similar stories.
Google obviously knows that I'm very interested in Covid-19 now because I get a lot of stories about it. In the past, it kept sending me stories about quantum mechanics, which I'd searched many times previously.
