With the passing of John Lewis, America has lost not only a man of history, but a man for our season; O how we need such men of unwavering principle, unassailable character, penetrating purpose, and heartfelt compassion.

(22,067 posts)Don't get me wrong: Romney is still not the president for me.
But at least he has a modicum of decency.

(1,207 posts)I know he's filthy rich- and I despise what he did to companies and workers.
But, he's not the gutter trash of the Trumps.

He's been demonstrating he's still a politician at heart, but, at least one who believes in the democratic process.

(9,478 posts)Voters he will need when he runs again in 2024. His speaking out has been very calculated. Ditto the impeachment vote.
Hes setting himself up to be the leader of the new Republican Party, after Trump self implodes.
I do believe he has a conscience though.

(37,163 posts)...but I hold out no hope of him doing so, at least not until we've done all the heavy listing and he feels it won't cost him much.
I'm glad Mitt knows the sort of things he should say when a statesman passes away. It's more than nearly all of his fellow Republicans, and I'm willing to give him the credit he's due.
I just feel the need to remind people that the "credit he's due" amounts to a participation trophy. The only reason he stands tall is because his party has sunk to levels-of-Hell depths, and he as been a part of that.

(90,978 posts)I know he wanted to serve in Trumps admin, and I also know (as should the rest of you) that he wanted to serve the country, not Trump.
Trump dangled the Secretary of State job in front of him, and went out of his way to humiliate Romney by making him come back to Trump Tower several times.
Given what has happened to every man of honor who thought he could serve the country while in the Trump admin, I am sure theres not a day goes by but that Senator Romney thanks his God that he escaped that fate.
