Rising coronavirus infections across dozens of states are threatening the U.S. economic recovery, forcing businesses and consumers to freeze spending and keeping the unemployment rate stubbornly high.
The government reported Thursday that retail sales rose a sharp 7.5% in June, but the positive trend was undercut by more recent data showing that credit card spending has stalled. A separate report showed that more than a million Americans sought unemployment benefits last week a sign that companies continue to cut jobs as the virus spreads across the heavily populated Sunbelt.
Economists fear that any positive momentum could come to a halt later this summer if infections and deaths rise and more businesses close.
"Conditions in the labor market remain weak and the risk of mounting permanent job losses is high, especially if activity continues to be disrupted by repeated virus-related shutdowns," said Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.

(22,201 posts)illnesses being caused! Someone needs to tell these so called stupid business leaders demanding that the economy be reopened that this failed policy won't work if everyone is sick and/or dead.
I suspect a lot of businesses are fine w/ staying closed in order to combat the CV, it's solely rump and his idiots demanding that things be reopened despite the extreme danger to all, so trump's economic numbers will go up.

(22,201 posts)mask policy). rump has been totally inept and incompetent in addressing the CV epidemic on a piece meal basis, state by state, when to fully address this epidemic, it must be coordinated on a fully national basis, all at once. Otherwise, what's to stop covid 19 infected persons traveling to a 'clean' area and starting the whole mess up again?

Business is starting to force the issue, implementing more mask wearing requirements for people visiting their properties. I was at a Publix here in Florida today. Every employee was masked and wearing the mask properly. For every 7 customers that had on a mask, I saw three that either didnt have on a mask or was wearing it incorrectly. So there is still more work to be done, but this is the highest customer mask wearing level that I have noticed since the Coronavirus hit the state.

(22,201 posts)The CVS, Target, and Schnucks stores in STLMO have all implemented mask policies (must wear), and I see just about everyone wearing a mask, when I am out in STLMO, but the overall numbers (overall state of MO) are still going up (CV numbers). A lot of the rural areas of MO are now being impacted w/ the CV pretty severely and the Tyson/other meat packing plants aren't solely to blame either.
I suspect that they may shut down certain areas of the state of MO or certain business segments but they haven't gotten to that point yet).
Be safe and good luck to you all where you are at!!

(31,261 posts)I noticed today that most of the people not wearing a mask appeared to have been trying to make a point, is wasnt like they just forgot to bring a mask along.

(11,949 posts)I went to the Winter Garden Publix today. Not exactly downtown Orlando but, granted, not as red as Ocala. For the first time every single person I saw had a mask on. Of course Orange County has mandatory masks but until today there was always 10% who were assholes.
And you are correct. At this point the people who are not wearing them are doing it to make a point.
Next week will be interesting.

(2,337 posts)Will take a decade to get back to anything resembling normal. My husband was just talking about how the repugs will blame democrats once we take back the White House, but that's always the case.
The repugs ruin things, democrats are forced to deal with it and fix the problem. Rinse, repeat. Does anyone have any examples of republicans doing something that actually benefited the general public?
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)hammer home what you alluded to. In EVERY presidential administration going back to 1902, Democratic Presidents have outperformed the republican President that came BEFORE and AFTER the Democrat. Democratic Congresses have also outperformed republican ones over that same time period. The difference is even more stark in favor of Democrats over the last 60 years.
Rachel Maddow mentioned the performance difference on one of her shows, but she as a news person should not have to dig that up, democratic consultants get paid big bucks to dig up and utilize such information to blunt republicans claims about being better for the economy, they have failed to do so.
