Got my hair cut yesterday by a hairstylist friend. She was wearing a mask like this:
My first thought was "This is what teachers need because they're talking to shorter kids"
This is the brand she had, but I'm sure there must be similar ones out there.

I'll stick to mask and sunglasses.

(3,634 posts)It's thirty bucks with shipping for a single unit, but worth every penny if the blanket mask order goes on very long -- which it's looking like it will here in Louisiana.

(3,634 posts)I am less worried about catching the CV myself because I'm fairly sure I've already had it, caught from one of the first 100 people in LA who tested positive back when you couldn't get a test unless you were half-dead with fever. I had severe joint pain which went away in the timeframe of a CV infection, and other coworkers at the same time lost sense of taste, had milder fevers, and in one case tested positive. I'm more worried about being in compliance with the mandatory order, and wearing a mask ruins my productivity since I can't do creative work with the thing on my face. I have a face shield which is considered acceptable, although I suspect for CV protection it's marginal because of the large open area at the bottom where my mouth and nose vent, but it was also designed to clip to a hard hat so I have to wear the hat all day. In an office. Which has resulted in some jokes about the construction zone, which is in turn really funny coming from a bunch of people who look like they're cosplaying bad guys from the Lone Ranger. And at least with the shield I don't have to worry about falling into the nose-out or chinstrap habit.

(3,634 posts)They don't tell you that anywhere on the site but only in the confirmation email once you've placed the order. "Fortunately" I suspect I'll still be needing it in that timeframe.

(3,634 posts)Sometimes businesses don't want to be over-optimistic. I've received surprisingly early deliveries from other businesses, really hope this will happen here too.

I bought some of these - just before the University changed its policy.
We had been told that we could teach in either masks or face shields. Given the classroom configuration, I had planned to teach using a face shield. I typically have at least one student a year who needs a lip-reading assist, which makes wearing a mask challenging. Since I can't stand hats, I bought some of these. The day after I placed my order the rules apparently changed.
They are extremely comfortable. They do create an odd echo (and my daughter confirms that my voice sounds a bit funny). If you wear glasses, you have to wear it at an angle that is a bit less ideal to avoid bumping into your glasses with the shield.
They are not a substitute for masks, generally. Aerosolized droplets can get in from the top. They are probably as good as a mask for transmission - most droplets/aerosolized virus will go straight out or down. This shield does a better job of stopping droplets than the top-down shield, and it's impermeable, so the better barrier probably makes up for the smaller amount that escapes out the top.

(3,634 posts)Masks don't do crap to protect you. But they limit the spread of your aerosols. That's what it's about, and I think the hat-mounted face shield I'm allowed to wear at work now is actually very bad at that. But the Z thing looks like it would be really good. I hope it arrives in time to make my work life a little more safer and comfortable.

(They do offer better protection to others, but they are also pretty effective at protecting you as long as they fit reasonably well and you are careful about not contaminating your self when you remove them.)
