After eliminating a quarter of roles at its Kent headquarters in April, the popular outdoor retailer REI has announced more layoffs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company will reportedly let go off 400 retail employees across its 162 stores nationwide this week.
"As the months roll by, its clear that the virus is going to be with us in a profound way, for the foreseeable future, wrote CEO Eric Artz in an email to employees. Were doing great work serving customer demand right now, but theres a lot we still dont know about the long-term impacts to the economy and the full impact to our business.
Back in April, Artz announced that he was taking a 100% pay cut for the next six months, and senior leadership took a 20% pay reduction as well. However, low sales, which are hitting the retail industry hard during the pandemic, have lead to further layoffs.
