'I beg them': Still-unemployed workers plead for Congress to extend federal $600 benefit

Just thinking about the end of July fills Cathy Munzer with terror. That's when the extra $600 in weekly federal unemployment benefits is set to expire, with no sign of agreement in Congress on an extension.

Munzer, a yoga and fitness instructor in New York City, lost her jobs at several sports clubs in mid-March amid the coronavirus pandemic. She depends on the enhanced payment to cover her rent and health insurance and buy food for herself and her daughter, Olivia. The roughly $500 she receives in state benefits isn't enough, she said.

With no date set for gyms to reopen, Munzer fears she could wind up homeless and be forced to send her 12-year-old to live with her ex-husband. She doesn't think she'll be able to find another job before the $600 federal boost runs out in three weeks and hopes lawmakers take action.

"No one is hiring. They are laying people off," said Munzer, 53. "I didn't choose this. I beg them to extend it."

subpoenas, summonses, writs, restraining orders, etc. and THEY ARE CLOSED. There's no way I can earn a living. But I'm still paying 1.25 MILLION in business insurance, plus my professional licenses, business license, everything all just going down the drain. I've also been under doctor's orders to stay at home due to age and underlying medical issues.

Without that Federal help, I'm down the drain too.

There will be MASSIVE evictions coming, I'm talking millions of them, which, sadly, I will make money from (when courts reopen and if it seems safer to work, which right now looks doubtful) because part of what I do is being the go-between for renters and landlords in the necessary procedures that are legally required.

People who are behind on their rent are CERTAINLY not gonna catch up with absolutely no income. They will be living in their cars, it's gonna be insane. And when their cars get repossessed?

and the rest of us are begging for an extension of the unemployment benefits. They only gave us 4 months worth, and it had already started BEFORE that 4 months of help kicked in. The implication is that the whole COVID virus is only 4 months long? That the economy is back to normal?

What planet do republican senators live on?

They will be removing $800-billion in spending from 20+-million people. That will lead directly to the loss of another 5-million jobs, and more Americans unemployed with no income, on health insurance, no prospects...and an economic domino effect of apocalyptic proportions.

Sounds like a Republican wet dream.

The article linked below was posted on another thread, but basically 1/3 of renters and homeowners are behind on there rent and mortgages.

Scary. It’s only going to get worse.

Edit to add:

For comparison, when everything collapsed under bush-43, delinquent mortgages were only at about 12%
