This kind of thing is happening everywhere. Do tell what perfect state you live in.

(17,912 posts)Wife has nephews in Charlotte and Cary. Roughly 80 to 90% wear masks up here, with quite a few businesses mandating them. We did what was necessary, opened gradually based on freaking SCIENCE and have gotten it under control...for now. Where we use to live, in the ruby red 11th district of NC, not so much. A restaurant owner in Madison county, NC summed up their group think to the Asheville Citizen Times a few weeks ago..."I ain't afraid of that ole virus." Well, you will be. Face masks are looked upon as political statements in Western NC, and not just a safety precaution.

(51,308 posts)I can't think of two more different locales than Charlotte and Cary lol. Charlotte is blue. A black Dem female mayor, black police chief - Cary is not the same place at all. I've met people from Cary lol.
Perhaps you've not been paying attention, but these assholes are in EVERY state.
Governor Cooper has followed the science, closed early, postponed the phased openings, and issued a mandated mask order.
Please don't lump "Western NC" into one stereotype. I lived in Boone/Blowing Rock for over ten years. It's a blue area. I have friends in Asheville, also blue. I live now in a red county in the Piedmont and have not seen a single episode like I see on video reports here daily from California,Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, etc. Everyone in my red county is wearing masks, and I've not seen anyone object.
But by all means, lump everyone in a state together because of one idiot. Hope you're saying the same about all the incidents in California and other states.
Hey, btw, do you have any people of color in your state? Any mayors or leaders of color? Just curious. I'm happy in our gorgeous state with its vast diversity, beautiful beaches, mountains, and wonderful people.
I'll wait for your posts calling other states "shit shows" when a video is posted about one of their citizens.
I find people who want to divide Dems have one reason for doing so. And we all know what that is.

Geographic bigotry, smearing everyone in a state or region, is considered perfectly respectable by too many who don't understand that it is not the choice of target that makes smearing whole populations with insulting stereotypes good or bad. It's always bad.

(17,912 posts)I was born and raised in TN and it's a political shit show, no two ways about it. I wouldn't live there again if my life depended on it. Unless there's massive demographic shift, with transplants diluting the Jesusland voters, it will remain a shit show I'd rather not have to deal with. Personally, I don't like the urge to throw up every time I think about my state government.
I speak of WNC since I know it best, but even in the Charlotte orbit, I'm hearing of resistance to common sense measures to limit Covid-19 spread. In the western 3rd of the state, Asheville and Boone are mere islands in a vast sea of Trumpland. He won many of those counties with 65 to over 75% of the vote. Unbelievable. Funny you mention Boone. Clinton only won Watauga county by only a couple percentage points. Gaston and Union counties, your neighbors in Gastonia and Monroe, are both heavily Rethuglican.
Some folks don't mind it and that's cool. Many I know would never leave their old home, and that's fine. Some friends wanted us to stay and help fight. But in my mind, our area is a lost cause of Faux News and fundy religious nuts. So after Trump's election, at the first good opportunity, my wife and I shook the dust off our shoes never to return. Sad, but life is too short to be stuck with Mark Meadows as your congress critter, or whoever the Rethugs dig up as his replacement. And the reactions to this pandemic I'm hearing about make me even happier we bailed. We're not perfect up here, but I could be one hell of a lot worse.

(51,308 posts)People who value science, education, progressive ideas....you know. Stuff like that. Versus a place where the state legislature bent on defunding public education and making the place a theocratic nightmare. Sorry, no "bathroom bills" up here. That's not how we roll.

(14,853 posts)Just like the elections with blue- and red-colored counties interspersed all over the place.
I live in a Republican area, unfortunately, and as expected there are many people not wearing masks here.
Yet just a few miles away from me is Yellow Springs OH, a very liberal town and the first place to mandate masks in all of Ohio.

(51,308 posts)I try not to judge Ohio or any of these other states that seem to be really on the forefront of the "Karen" thing lol.
I always react to south hate here because it's just wrong. Most of those throwing the south hate have never lived here, and if they did, failed miserably in some way. Most likely had difficulty living in diversity imo.
People who try to divide Dems are serving one purpose. And showing themselves very clearly.

(17,912 posts)but from results of the 2016 election, a big chunk of it. Numerous counties gave Donnie 65 to over 75% of the vote? How the hell to do you explain that!
https://www.nytimes.com/elections/2016/results/president
I lived there for over a decade. Lots of great folks we're still in contact with, but a whole hell of a lot of Trump trash. Like the guys who didn't like my wife's bumper sticker and flashed white supremacist hand signs at her. Then cut her off making her have to slam on the breaks as they missed her by inches. Then there's the open carry nuts, packing heat at Walmart and Lowes...routinely. You can't help but wonder what the fuck is wrong with these people? Asheville, Chapel Hill, Durham, Charlotte and others are great, but are surrounded by a sea of ruby red, Faux News nuttery I'd rather not deal with on a daily basis.
The only place worse was South Carolina. Lived there for 2.5 years. Next door neighbor came over and in causal conversation said some of the most blatantly racist things I've ever heard uttered. Checking out the new neighbor to see if I was a racist too I guess. And the segregated nurse's lounge at the local hospital. Not officially, of course, but it was obvious that white folks didn't sit with the black folks. Something my wife had never experienced in her life and some of her African American colleagues had to explain it to her. And not just in bum fuck. That is large, regional facility.
My wife has family in northern New England so we knew we could live rural here without worrying if our neighbors were setting up a militia training camp or having Saturday night cross burning practice. It's not perfect by any means as we do have a few Trumpers here and there, but dear god on a stick, its light years from what we experienced down south. Even most Republicans here have a level of sanity I've not seen in their cohort since the 80's. So....we voted with our feet.

(1,206 posts)But I'm in New Jersey where it's a state mandate that you must wear a face covering in places of business and I've never, ever seen anyone actively go against the order.
Only once, at CVS, did someone not have on a mask - she was informed immediately that she needed one and simply went back out to her car, retrieved it, and put it on - no argument or attitude at all.
Again, I'm lucky to be living here and not in areas where masks are 'suggestions' or where people are more concerned about their 'rights' rather than their and others' well-being.

(1,206 posts)Generally speaking the people are some of the worst I've ever been around and I've been extremely fortunate to have lived all over the country - which is why I am surprised that people are being so well behaved where the virus is concerned, because normally I've never seen a group of people so unconcerned with anyone but themselves.
If I didn't have to live here because of the work that my wife and I do then we would be gone.
If your user name is a clue to which part of New Jersey you're from, then I will say that it's different in South Jersey than up here in North Jersey - I'm from Philadelphia originally and much prefer the people down in the Southern parts of the state to those who reside near me.
monmouth4
(9,695 posts)you're not happy there but I do agree and North Jersey/South Jersey are two different worlds.. One is NY, the other Philly.

(2,491 posts)Northern New Jersey people. I live in Essex County, I can say that the people here are kind and considerate. Of course, you're going to get a few jerks anywhere, but I don't see excessive bad behavior at all. Where in North Jersey are you?
BTW, I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, taught in the South Bronx and lived in Manhattan for several of my adult years.

I've lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island and grew up in Philly - I've also lived in Portland Oregon, Denver, Santa Rosa California, Seattle and have been to all of the lower 48 states.
The people in North Jersey are the worst. Bar none.

There are some places where you don't HAVE to mask up, but I'm doing it for another reason: I want to see that fool and crook you support voted out of office!

(43,049 posts)it shouldn't happen at all if we consider ourselves even marginally civilized.
My first reaction when I see these is to just punch her in the mouth. Reason means nothing to these people, but a beating might get through to them. Arrest, torture or therapy takes far too long and not worth the effort.
Since I'm not in any way a violent person, I doubt I would actually do that, but I could be talked into grabbing her bag of lunch and throwing it across the parking lot while yelling "Fetch".

(3,635 posts)Our rights are not absolute as courts have ruled time and time again, especially when our actions are detrimental to the public as a whole.
Also, a private establishment can dictate dress code and saftey practices as it sees fit.
