(11,303 posts)it out and return it to the county. They verify your request and mail you a Absentee election ballot. You vote and mail it back. Not an easy process but doable.

(115,947 posts)Fill out the application on-line, you get the ballot in the mail about a week later. The process was very easy.

(10,284 posts)or third homes. Mail-in ballots are what Democrats use while they're stuck at home, quarantined, unemployed and broke, trying to stay alive after Trump totally fucked up both the pandemic response and the economy, attempting to cast a vote despite all the GOP's suppression schemes.

(175,766 posts)I'm in Cook, County, IL, home to Chicago and it's near-in suburbs. The county election board helpfully sent out their email on applying early this year. Usually, it comes in late September.

(54,770 posts)But, you have to request a ballot -- at least in normal time. Some states did automatically mail out ballots during primaries this Spring.
Another 5 states vote by mail all the time.
So, 34 states pretty much allow voting by mail if voters want to. By November, some other states will likely include Covid19 as a valid excuse for absentee voting.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,947 posts)a thing that's almost nonexistent anyway (except when a GOP postal worker changes the party on people's applications from D to R), whether the state automatically sends a ballot or you have to request one. If your state doesn't send you a ballot automatically you request it, and whoever processes the request checks it against your registration and sends you your ballot. You fill it out and mail it back. Somebody checks it against a voter list to be sure it went to the right place and wasn't duplicated, et voila. I don't get where the alleged fraud would occur in either instance.

(54,770 posts)out, it might go to someone else -- the voter it was intended for has moved or Democrats steal them (because GOPers are the only honest people in this world, in their mind). GOPers believe "these people" would vote for a Democrats, because GOPers would never cheat. That's absolute nonsense, of course -- as you point out, the GOPer mailman -- but it's what they believe.
I agree it is easy to check for duplicate ballots, etc. But GOPers don't believe that. They think "cheating Democrats" are going to game the system. Again, absolute nonsense.
One thing I do think could be a problem, although not a big one --
Let's just say I get your ballot and mark it for trump and send it in. You don't receive your automatic ballot, so you request another one, and send it in voting for the Democrat. Now, the county election officials have two ballots from the same person. If it's only a few, they can figure it out and maybe even go after the fraudster. But, if it happened a bunch -- as GOPers fear, because we are all crooks in their mind -- it would be a nightmare untangling in a close election.
In any event, I encourage everyone I know to vote by mail since my rube state allows no-excuse absentee voting, for some reason, and has almost 30 days of early voting. There is not excuse not to vote here. trump will continue of blow smoke and fan ignorant white wing beliefs.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,947 posts)and if the covid crud is still out there in November (and it probably will be), maybe they'll be too scared to vote in person. By then maybe they'll have figured out that it's real.

(34,123 posts)In each case, there is a ballot verification process that requires information generally only know to the voter (driver's license number, partial social security number, date of birth, etc), and there is a signature that has to reasonably match the voter registration card on file.
And that happens whether ballots are automatically sent out OR requested.

(13,059 posts)It's all about trying everything he can to enable voter suppression. He knows that low turnout elections generally favor Republicans. So he will do everything he can to suppress the votes of people of color and other likely Democratic voters.
Warpy
(111,417 posts)He thinks they're different because in some states, absentee ballots have to be justified by things like military service overseas while in others, they're no questions asked (he hates that) and Oregon is vote by mail (which he thinks is Satanic).
His use of the words "voting privilege" is also telling. No, you sack of bile sodden adipose tissue, it's a duty, and anything that allows people to discharge that duty is a good thing.
Voting by mail in Oregon will have been in place for 40 years next year. Some districts even elect Republicans, but this is not something he knows. He just knows that unless the "privilege" can be restricted to white, male Republicans, they'll lose elections, and that's robbery.
Expect more of this horseshit. He's a malignant narcissist. They can't lose through any fault of their own, other people have to cheat them out of it. They know this because cheating is how they get through their own lives.
