On FB yesterday he posted the vandalism of a 911 memorial which is disgraceful.
But then proceeded to blame the "Anti American Sissified liberals" his words, and went on a religious rant how the morality of the country is being destroyed, he happens to be a rabid hypocritical Catholic. There are no suspects at the time of the article.
I called him out stating his post is a prime example of why we have such division. I have been a liberal all my life served in the Army and and proud of who I am and my political beliefs and will not be vilified for them. He did not take it well and I don't care at this point
Its a shame we have known each other since we were in diapers and had lots of fun as kids we are now mid 50's. As adults we both have our own businesses his construction and mine custom woodworking, we have collaborated on many jobs over the years though since 45 has been in office not as much.
I am done not taking a stand to brainwashed cult members, it will not change his mind but maybe he will think before going on a public rant.

Hoping to change someone just doesn't always work.
Good luck.
OH, use the Zen of woodworking.

(6,943 posts)Boycott their advertisers.
Thats all the average person can do in this fight.
Debating a Zuckerberg zombie is futile.
The cousin is only mindlessly repeating the Trump words placed in his head.
In a debate, there is no shutting up a parrot or expecting a give and take conversation of depth and substance.

(5,792 posts)... the problem is Trump. Nothing that happens to Facebook will change that.

(6,943 posts)Discussions of substance on Facebook are mostly useless and conflict-based. Finding agreement on Facebook is swimming upstream. Sure, some people can swim upstream. But 99% cant. The problem is Facebook, have discussions elsewhere.

(5,792 posts).... woodwizard's right wing cousin? And talking to him in person is going to change his mind?
Not likely.
Facebook is the "boogeyman de jour". If you're going to spend time and trouble organizing a boycott, boycott something worth boycotting.

(26,315 posts)A female veteran. He probably thinks I shouldn't be able to serve, either.
I see him once a year, during the holidays, and only because my family guilts me into including him. He will come to Christmas Eve dinner ONLY if I agree that we will not discuss politics. He's the only right winger and will gladly discuss politics with any males in the family. Just not with me.

Enough with going along to get along.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Please, take some time off but remember what you like and value in him.
IF the current trend continues, before too long he will not only go a lot more quiet on the views you can't tolerate but eventually likely moderate them greatly. Like tens of millions of others, he's following their current leader and standing allied with his group. And right now as they face defeat in this great battle, they're emotionally doubling down on entrenched positions.
Tomorrow, though, they will have a new leader to follow, and depending on who that turns out to be, the differences that creates may astonish you. Wait and see?
Btw, interesting that he referred to liberals as "sissified." Doesn't seem to fit the current meme of Satan-worshiping fascists/socialists out to destroy America. I remember with nostalgia the good old days of merely being called "naive" and "bleeding heart," terms from before they went full-demon on us.

(17,658 posts)..I simply dont have time for toxic people in my life. I stay off face book except to post dog and anti trump stuff. I never go to my feed to read the comments and never do I just hang out on FB to get any news. I literally forget its even there. I check out my nieces pregnancy updates once a week and see what pix my dtr has posted. but thats it. Its not a healthy place to go for me.

You're right, it almost certainly won't change his mind. But the reason to speak up, publicly or online, is for everyone else. I think one of the reasons rightwing BS is considered "normal" by so many people is that they hear little else. Most people don't follow politics. The rightwingnuttery is loud and pervasive. Liberals often don't speak up, because they think they're "the only one". So the impression is that the rightwing point is the popular one even though the opposite is actually true.
So keep speaking up, it's the people who overhear you or read your comments that matter, not the rightwing loudmouth. Because those are the minds you can change or at least make think.

(4,914 posts)They assume that a lot of folks agree with them because they only are exposed to folks who agree with them in the media. In real life, they are in the minority. We need to constantly and gently remind them of it.
He's using a "both siderism" argument to distract from the real issue. The Trump crime family and white supremacy are collapsing. Oh look, a squirrel (leftist bad act).
Change is happening in the US at an accelerated pace. The world has awakened en masse to understand that Black Lives really do matter, and that we are going to throw the scammers out of government soon. They are flailing around to discredit the movement towards justice.
They are scared shitless to see this realignment happening before their eyes. They are now the outsiders.
Never let them forget it. But leave the door open a bit so that they can rejoin the human race.

(131 posts)A right-wing acquaintance posted this 9/11 memorial damage story on Facebook, a retweet of our local Faux News station. She called for the National Guard to be brought in to deal with the situation.
So I went looking to get more information. Here is what CNN had to say: "The police "will not leave any stone unturned" to locate those responsible."
So thus far no persons have been identified.

(5,688 posts)Good on ya! Me too! Tho it hurts like hell, I recently broke up with my man.
His intolerance, hidden until recently racism and extreme conservative Catholic upbringing was the death knell. He originally told me he supported tRumps economic agenda but didnt think he should be pres.
The last thing he told me was tRump was sent by God. Well, I said NOT my God. Idk, who the hell your God is.
It ended badly. I moved out on the weekend by myself. It sucked but is getting better. I sure had rose colored glasses on for a while.

(32 posts)Other than a few Kasich/McCain/Romney type Republicans that condemn 45 and even though still Republican at heart are voting country over party, I've eliminated pretty much all of them from my life.
I have no patience for trump supporters or apologists for him.

(4,455 posts)because he went ballistic when I made a FB post highly critical of Trump. Some people cannot be civil or decent, so removing them from your life is the only answer. You did the right thing.
Mister Ed
(5,946 posts)Mrs. Ed has been a model of forbearance on social media for years, but she is all done with that now. She never starts the fight, but she won't back down from a challenge, and she'll verbally pummel her opponents until they're reduced to whimpering, "Nothing you can say is gonna change my mind!"
She knows that's true, but she's not out to convert any Deplorables. Her recent fiery debates have always been carried out in front of online witnesses, and she seems to have gotten some of those witnesses thinking.

(18,003 posts)Hypocritical Catholic? Is he aware that those in the protestant camp, particularly down south, think he's a heretic, Catholic churches should be closed and papists should turn to the "true" faith or suffer unspeakable consequences in this life and the next? Hey, turn about is fair play ya know. The blood of protestant martyrs demands no less. To fundy protestants, Catholicism is the whore of Babylon. It's the false church, leading people straight to hell. I should know. I had that preached to me for the first ~25 years of life on this planet. Fundies consider Catholics the enemy and no less than the apostates of Satan.
Run that by your reich wing cousin and see if his head explodes.

(849 posts)In retrospect I misspoke on not taking a stand. Some families on my wife's side I am banned from going to because I declared Bush would go down as the worst president in history after the Iraq war at a family gathering, knowing full well 99 percent of them voted for the shrub. One called the next day and went on full rant about how disrespectful I was to the president. I have thought about calling her back and telling her I was wrong and would like to revise my statement to fit with more current information.
I was just trying to keep the peace with my cousin all these years but just had enough, if he is offended to the point we do not work together that's OK.
To everyone saying get off FB. Facebook is not the problem it is a communication tool and you are in control of how much you put out there. I belong to a few artist and technical groups that share constructive ideas not politics. I have shared and learned on these groups.
If he still posts his righteous rants I will just put him on ignore and go on with my life, I said my piece.
