Sell it.
Take it out of the state park system and sell it. It was originally in private hands to begin with. Let those who say its part of our "legacy and history" put their money where their mouth is.
And the best part, that money won't be used for political donations.

(54,770 posts)Seriously, it is a very popular park, and not just for white wingers. I am sure for most people, removing the carving would improve the place.

(10,175 posts)a few weeks ago: let nature take its course. It will take quite a few decades, but eventually the carvings will be overgrown.

(15,062 posts)the state will drill, chip, and dynamite it until unrecognizable... Give the bigots a chance to buy it, but make sure the state comes out waaaaaaay ahead if in fact a buyer steps forward.

(6,410 posts)...tax payers are funding it. And in my view, they shouldn't.
Let it become a private park and museum. Just like the ultra conservative religions build Noah's Ark replica's, theme parks, etc. If it works out, good for them.
If it doesn't, then they can create a preservation fund, that slowly removes the images and put then reassemble them in some large abandoned hanger or warehouse. And charge admission as a private museum.
Tax payers shouldn't be funding a monument to people who tried not just keep slavery, but expand it. What people forget, the North was trying to contain slavery into just the southern states....they wanted to expand it all the way to the west coast.

(421 posts)given to the buyers. Remember that the cockamamie Noahs Ark/Creation Museum in Kentucky got millions from the state.

(6,410 posts)Much as despise Mien Komph, I would never advocate book burning it and trying to eliminate it from history. Bad examples serve as good reminders. The Taliban blew up the Bhudda statues in Afghanistan...and history has not been kind to that.
Tax payers don't have to fund the preservation, so let private enterprise figure it out. Sure the Koch people can fund this instead of hosting a bunch of conservative think tanks, political donations, etc. Heck, Sean Hannity should be challenged if he isn't a major donor for contributing.

(1,206 posts)Either that or put them in a museum somewhere, but I don't think the carving at Stone Mountain could possibly be moved - although it could perhaps be re-carved into something else or destroyed altogether.
Then again, we humans can do some pretty complex things so maybe.

(6,410 posts)...to higher ground when constructing the Answan Dam. It can be done. Probably have to take a chunk of rock out behind it, but it can be done.
And I agree, same with the statues....sell them off. Nice infusion to the state coffers. I'm sure some Civil War museums will buy them, perhaps even the Smithsonian when they want to show off a Civil War collection.

(14,565 posts)I love to walk up Stone Mountain. I have done it dozens of times including every decade of my life except the current one, which I hope to accomplish soon.
I often make Stone Mountain a destination while returning from a trip, just for that purpose of walking to the top and then enjoying the view and fresh air from up there, plus the feeling of accomplishment.
There is one resting area maybe 70% to the top but just before the tough stuff begins. Then a long single handrail on the most difficult section.
Nobody is thinking about the Confederacy while making that climb.

(18,003 posts)Just remove the racist crap from the exposed surface of the ancient pluton. Let it go back to it's natural state before the cheesy monument to hate was scratched on it's surface. It's really no different than highly offensive graffiti scrawled on the natural world. No one should reasonably object to scrubbing off what started with Klan donations.

(6,410 posts)But erasing history is never the solution. I'd like to think a century from now, people visiting a museum and looking at these monuments with absolute disgust.

(7,475 posts)It's a shame it was defaced in this way. If it could be restored, that would be incredible.

(14,565 posts)It's got lovely scenic drives, picnic areas, covered bridges, a very nice golf course, and just overall serene feeling. You can only see the carvings from a small percentage of the park. And the buildings there have Civil War movies than are real world and not slanted toward the Confederacy.
My dad was always very wise. From the first time we visited Stone Mountain in the '60s he provided the backdrop that the South was still backwards and bigoted, and therefore that's what we were seeing on the side of the mountain.
