(1,288 posts)I often feel sorry for him when I think about how no one, NO ONE, would want to be the way he is. This photo looks like a boy who's terrified.

(4,260 posts)of a child before he bursts into tears, or a child that has "shut down" - something unsettling. I think I will study it later. Almost like the child in "The Bad Seed" as a toddler.

(12,712 posts)That's when he was wishing people into the cornfield. It's been documented.
Not long after it was ripping the wings off of birds, throwing them up into the air and yelling, "LOSER!" as they fell, bleeding to the ground. He would finish that up by brutally stomping on them, setting them ablaze and proclaiming, "You're FIRED!"

(31 posts)I actually teared up. I've worked with babies and toddlers for decades, and I see nothing but pain in that little face.

(22,512 posts)His childhood must have been horrific. And while plenty of people have horrific childhoods and don't grow into racist, terrible people, in the moment, I have nothing but pity and compassion for that three-year-old.

I see an innocent child. We are reading into it because we know what he became.

(10,849 posts)I could show you a number of pics of me and my sister. The expression is exactly the same, sad, shell-shocked. Not a good starting point for any child.
Still, I'll reserve my empathy for others, those who don't weaponize their early scars as a way to abuse the world.

(13,776 posts)If I saw this picture next to an article about a missing or abused child, I'd think "poor sweet little thing."
What makes me extra sad about this picture is knowing that this small child grew up so damaged that he would devote his life to damaging others. Whether the damage was self-inflicted or caused by his parents or both, it's always so heartbreaking to remember that the most horrible people in the world were born innocent.

(4,574 posts)it's a fool's errand trying to read something like that into someone's photograph.
If that photo was presented here without suggestive context, one would just as likely say "what a sweet, innocent child".
