If I had to choose between spending time with one good dog or five good people, Id pick the dog every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
That may sound anti-social, but its a pragmatic choice, driven by data.
People, even the good ones, have more flaws than dogs. People, even the good ones, struggle to love without conditions. And dogs, at least the ones Ive known, talk less than humans while managing to say more.
We bipedal ape-descendants dont deserve dogs, yet they accept and adore us. Then they leave, always far too soon. And we are stuck with our dumb human flaws, and a dog-sized hole in our day-to-day.
I had to say farewell to a good dog last week, on a pantingly hot July 3 afternoon. She had cancer and there was nothing we could do these past couple months except love her and spoil her and give her approximately a million behind-the-ear scritches and wait until she let us know it was time to go.

(67,762 posts)We have lost far too many. But facing that painful loss, we go back again and again for more. Three of them right now. One very old.
Rex Huppke is so right. He has our condolences as he deals with the new hole in his heart.

(17,862 posts)My 15 year old boy (Border Collie/Collie mix) is reaching his end as well. The walks are much shorter, but he still loves them. I now try to drive to interesting places with plenty of smells to get those short walks. We use to be able to walk 3-4 hours at a time - now he is about 30 to 45 minutes on a good day and fewer good days.

(2,193 posts)If nothing else, their departure reminds us that life is fleeting and that we must embrace every moment.
And, like any loved one, we are there to hold them as they pass-- the alternative would be sadder still, that we would pass to leave them alone.
To anyone who has lost their friend, I'm crying with you, please hold dear your friend's gifts to you over those years.
They wouldn't have it any other way.

(2,193 posts)I'm spiritual but not religious. Energy cannot be destroyed, it endures, bad or good our souls, our energy, are lasting.
I would like to share something remarkable thing that happened on January 4, when Cooper passed at the clinic where we spent a few hours in a very thoughtful series of steps that lead to our farewell, my wife and I, too him.
It was afternoon when we took Cooper for his last ride, and dark by the time we left.
My wife has two sons from a former marriage, both adults now, but 5 years since she heard from the older son, who is mildly Asberger and socially different. It has always broken her heart that they can't connect.
We left the clinic and we were 4 or 5 blocks out on our way home when her phone rang.
You can probably guess at this point who was calling.
We both, later that evening, agreed that Cooper had pulled a string or two, he somehow had a paw in this.
After 19 years of dating, we were married on February 22. A small party of under 30 but both sons were there.

(6,899 posts)We lost our 14+ year old German shepherd dog in early June. He died in his sleep after a long deterioration in health.
He was almost perfect in his behavior and was a joy to take on walks or car rides to new places to walk. I miss him terribly.

(9,426 posts)We have had many dogs over the years, mainly mixed breeds. Every one of them was special, and loveable. They really do "Leave paw prints on our hearts". Wonderful animals, cats are too. All the love they bring along with them is so precious. Worst part of having a pet is the saying goodbye part. Never, ever gets any easier no matter how many times we are forced to make the choice for them. All we can do is make sure they know they are loved, and valued members of the family. That Rainbow Bridge is heavily travelled by many, many wonderful pets.

(195 posts)At 86 and in failing health and after a very interesting life very well lived, my mother was ready to let go. Ally was eight and full of life, love and curiosity until she developed immune mediated hemolytic anemia due, I'm certain, to over vaccinating or vaccinosis. Her body attacked her red blood cells reading them as alien and she was gone in 6 days. I, too, enjoy my time with my two current girls, Audrey and Daphne, more than any people I know.

(12,165 posts)We had him put to sleep two weeks ago from today. He was so funny and silly before arthritis and cancer quickly started him a downhill slide. He loved to play fetch with his dinosaur baby and his favorite activity was eating.
We tried to manage his pain as best we could, but his muscles were wasting away. This made the arthritis more painful, and we knew it was time. It wouldnt have been long before he would have been unable to walk.
So we took him to the vet. They had placed a blanket on the floor so we could lay or sit with him before he passed. He was so calm and his passing was peaceful.
I miss him so much. I love him. Some nights I wake up thinking I hear him barking.

(65,161 posts)I have had and lost 4 dogs in my life. Only one, my first dog Scotty, lived to be over 12. It is worth it to have a dog for the love and companionship, even though heartbreak comes way too soon. After my Goldendoodle named Gordon died in 2018, I have been without a dog due to not being able to take care of one properly. I feel a void for sure.

(13,056 posts)My chocolate lab is 12 now and I'm trying to enjoy every day I have left with him. He has arthritis and he is on pain meds. I think that if he could talk he would say that he is willing to put up with the pain so that he can be with me. But I know the time will come when I must let him go.
