Donald Trump launches baseless attack on Bubba Wallace over noose 'hoax'

(Guardian UK) Donald Trump has launched a baseless attack on Bubba Wallace, Nascar’s only black driver, over an incident in which a noose was found in his team garage last month.

“Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great Nascar drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX?” wrote the president on Monday morning. “That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!”

Trump’s tweet echoes conspiracy theories aimed at Wallace. An FBI investigation found that Wallace was not a victim of a hate crime and the noose had been fashioned as a door pull last fall, long before his team had been assigned the garage at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.

Quite why Wallace should apologise is a mystery: he did not find or report the noose.

11. It was a noose. It wasn't a hoax, but it wasn't directed AT Wallace.

The way that it was characterized from the beginning was messed up. There was a rope that was fashioned like a noose in the stall that Wallace and his crew were assigned. It had been there for some time before the assignment. Wallace was not the one who found the noose or complained about it. The whole "support" thing was around the noose in conjunction with the Confederate Flags being taken down at events.

Trump is just an idiot who jumps on pieces of information, distorts them, and uses them to stoke division.

Only 11 garages had a pull down rope fashioned in a loop, and only 1 had a loop fashioned in a noose: the garage assigned to Bubba Wallace.

What are the odds that the only garage assigned to a black driver had a noose?

The facts are this: of all 29 tracks and 1684 garages inspected at that time, only one garage had a door pull fashioned as a noose. And this one garage was assigned to the only black NASCAR member. You may not find that odd, but a lot of people would. Especially after Mr. Wallace had recently pushed for NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag.

Funny that no other garages had a noose door pull but his. It could be a coincidence, but I would place my bet on it not being a coincidence.

In any case, the investigation is over and the matter is closed. Mr. Wallace wasn’t even the one noticed the noose.
