Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) on Sunday both acknowledged and downplayed America's racist history by saying that the country had "blemishes" in its past.
During an interview on CNN, Ernst was asked if she was comfortable with President Donald Trump's rhetoric on monuments that celebrate Confederate history and the legacy of slavery.
"I truly do believe that we live in the greatest nation on the face of the planet," Ernst opined. "And we do have blemishes in our history. And we need to come together and have some hard discussions about our past."
"But the great thing about this nation is that we can learn from those blemishes, learn from those hard times in the past," she added, "and continue to evolve and a continually blessed nation. And again, we do live in the greatest nation on the face of the planet. And I hope that others understand that."

Your party has driven a wedge between Conservatives and Liberals and blacks and whites long before the Russians, going back to Nixon, and Reagan, and Gringich and his lessons on division.

(9,951 posts)... a "blemish"! Poor Joni... she doesn't know you put a tiny spec of Clearasil on it, and it goes away more quickly... also, it hides the "blemish" and nobody will know... I wonder how many men Joni has castrated today?

(40,201 posts)Slavery, genocide against the Native American peoples, Jim Crow, women denied the right to vote, abuse and discrimination of all groups and minorities not White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, ugly and immoral wars, corruption in government and industry, abuse of the environment......the list is endless. These are not blemishes. This is a part of American History that needs to be accepted as historical fact, not whitewashed and excused. Failing to confront the past, to acknowledge the wrong and the suffering, prevents a nation from moving forward. As long as there are people in positions of power who see past horrors as little more than "blemishes" we can never heal. We can never become better.
Joni Ernst is a vapid stupid woman completely lacking in critical thinking skills. She doesn't possess the intellect to have a deep understanding of history and how understanding history predicts the future.
