(12,712 posts)Notice the COVID-19 catching beach balls patrolling the area. They soak the virus right up.

(4,959 posts)Michigan spiked early and shut down pretty tight, but like 40+ other states we've loosened up too much and cases are rising quickly again. The behavior is condoned by the reopening measures.
Even in my very blue town, which locked down willingly for a few months, people are relaxing, fewer masks, lots of parties... especially near campus. And students are coming back in the fall?
Fuuuuuuck.

(9,998 posts)People are up for the 4th, but sticking pretty much to their own parties on our end on the Lake. I took a long kayak ride and while there were boaters and jetskis, it was less that usual for the 4th. I always avoid the South end sandbar area.
I am up to meet a plumber about a possible well issue (long tangent story I will spare DU) at a family owned place. First trip outside of home since shelter one place in March.

(47 posts)The public access here was very crowded today. There was some kind of disagreement about boat access, we could hear yelling and gravel. And I have never understood why people think you want to listen to THEIR music loud, I don't even listen to my own music loud. I kayaked by and it was as if there were no social distancing suggestions ever made. Sigh

(5,499 posts)Most of those people are probably not from Michigan. Most are Chicago people who have Michigan lake houses. We call the Illinois lake people FIPs. If anyone asks what that means, we lie and say, Friendly Illinois People.

(4,959 posts)Whitmer has gotten a ton of attention for doing a good job, and she did act fast and keep things tight for awhile. But the thought that we could reopen this much and not spike up is absurd.
In my blue town, people have faith in her so if she says it's ok to eat inside restaurants and shop inside nonessential stores, they're doing it. Obviously the clip in the OP is extreme, that's why its news, but it's not just parties like that causing the problem.
It sucks.
