Florida breaks record with 11,458 new COVID-19 cases

MIAMI — Saturday’s update on new confirmed COVID-19 cases from the Florida Department of Health reflected the state recorded a new single-day high, rocketing past previous peaks.

Florida added 11,458 cases, beating previous record of 10,109 by 13%. Miami-Dade and Broward counties in South Florida also set records: Of Florida’s total, Miami-Dade County accounted for 2,418, and 1,348 came from Broward County. Of the state’s 18 deaths reported Saturday, 12 were in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Since the novel coronavirus pandemic started, 190,052 people have tested positive in Florida, 3,803 of whom have died.

The state began adding antigen test results to the case totals on Thursday. Antigen tests are a new category of tests that detect fragments of proteins found in the virus by testing samples collected by nose swabs. The FDA authorized the first COVID-19 tests in May.

since the start and applying predictive analytics. What I expected to see following the dumb ass Memorial Day weekend decisions happened exactly when I predicted it would.

Watch what happens in Florida the week of July 20th. Basically you're looking at people who engage in high risk activity starting to feel crappy in a week or two and their test results coming back a week or two later. So in three weeks the shit we're seeing now is going to pale by comparison.

I know DeSantis is pretending there's nothing he can do to help, and seemingly TRYING to make it worse too.

Are people still flocking together in groups there, like it's just a regular holiday of prior years?

Very, very few wearing masks. I’m not going anywhere but grocery store.

I've seen reckless behavior in SW Ohio too, but I'd HOPE it would improve if this state was designated a new "epicenter" for the country. Ohio might be a future one?

I hope that you can order grocery pick-up. That's what I do, despite how research shows that quick trips to grocery stores aren't nearly as risky compared to other types of indoor activities.

In a very conservative area. He's actually been surprised that no one has objected to the mandatory mask rule the library instituted. He was expecting hissy fits.

It's not just the panhandle. I am blown away by the lack of mask wearing I witness from inside my car when doing curbside pickups.

venturing out I did today was for my sister who is home sick waiting on the results of her COVID test. I picked up a prescription at a pharmacy drive thru and did curbside pickup for her groceries. If I didn't have that to do, I wouldn't have left my house.

I will say that I was shocked by how few people were wearing masks walking in and out of the grocery store.

A friend of mine texted to tell me she was furious with her husband and son because they were going to a cousin's house for a party that would consist of 4 or more households, 10+ adults, and at least 4 kids under 11 and she couldn't talk them out of it.

Given what my husband has reported from his forays into the hellhole of Nextdoor, it sounds like plenty of people in our community still think the danger is largely exaggerated and have every intent of celebrating the same way they do every year.

I have no idea what the beach side hotels are like right now. If online booking prices are a reliable indicator, I'm not seeing any signs that they are having to slash prices to get people to come. Which tells me they probably have decent capacity right now, and that is troubling indeed.

My town canceled its annual fireworks display, but the county sheriff persisted with the annual parade - with a twist. He's coordinating a reverse parade. The floats and folks who would ordinarily be marching down the street are being lined up along the roadway in stationary positions while people can drive down the street in their cars to view it. Honestly not sure what to think about that. Really the whole thing should have just been called off.

Some days it does feel like DeSantis is actively trying to kill Floridians. The people in authority in my county are just abject cowards and won't make the right decision because "OMG, it might be hard to enforce or someone might get mad at me."

Overall, I think typical July 4th activities are significantly diminished. However, there will be enough covidiots that our state is going to be significantly impacted by their stupidity.

Glad that you're doing grocery pick-ups and trying to keep yourself safe!

I've also observed (from my car) lots of grocery shoppers without masks around here, like below 5%!

Then the last time, it was around 80%! I've been getting groceries about every two weeks, and I have no idea why there was a sudden change! It's not like the local news was reporting an explosion of cases or something. Weird.

Both happened yesterday. The curfew is again 10 PM to 6 AM.

Younger people here have not taken it seriously throughout. The numbers are not surprising in the least.

A guy a block away put up a Trump/Pence sign yesterday prominently in his front yard. I won't be walking by that house any more during the holiday season. He has by far the most elaborate light display in the neighborhood.

Actually if Biden wins I'll make it a point to walk past there every night in December. Maybe some type of, "Worst of All Time" shirt will be available by that time.

The main problem is bars and other indoor gatherings, so I hope it includes all of that and not just the outdoor beaches.

Florida looks set to exceed that by a lot because NY’s peak occurred while the city and state were locked down. Florida is basically wide open. It’s going to be a self-made disaster.

Depending upon testing capacity (huge caveat in terms of number of tests and turnaround time for results), I would not be at all surprised if we see double that on a daily basis in three weeks.

If there is a model for pretending a pandemic doesn't exist, Florida is setting the example. Cannot tell you how frustrated I have been with this from day 1.
