I saw this on CNN yesterday. A warning from an ICU director:
"If you want to see August 1st, stay home July 4th."

(2,596 posts)I used to love flying. Jeebus, I haven't liked getting on a plane - any airline or jet - since 2001. It's just too uncomfortable and packed to travel anymore. They figured out they could shrink the seats and jam yet more passengers into a tube and subject everyone to abject torture.

(43,333 posts)Here in Sweden, with basically no lock-down and the all the under-high school level schools never closed we have had one death under 20, and that was a 4 year old a couple months back with multiple comorbidities. Zero deaths in the 5 years old to 20yo age group, and a total of 26 deaths under 40 years of age (half the entire population). 26 deaths out of over 4 million people. 1 per 154,000 rate. Around 99% of the deaths here have been over 50 years of age, 96% over 60 years of age, 89% over 70 years of age. 68% were over 80yo, 26% of all COVID-19 deaths were over 90 tears of age.

In the US, due to a lack of testing and asymptomatic, a very conservative number would be 6 million cases. at a 5% death rate that works out to 300,00, not the 130,000 it actually is. I think it is likely that 10 million people in the US have had it, making a mortality rate of around 1.3%, and that rate is massively skewed to the over 45yo cohorts (especially the over 55yo ones.) The US does have a very slightly higher death rate for the under 40yo, under 35yo cohorts than Sweden does, but that is easily explained as the average US citizen is more unhealthy and has poorer healthcare than an average Swede is and does.

(17,911 posts)Good odds when it comes to being pulled over for speeding. Not so good when the outcome is death. And it's not just your own death you have to worry about. The disease can cause serious complications including lung damage.

Just because it doesn't kill you, doesn't mean you're going to get off scot free.

I don't hear of much to address this. And this administration is riding by the seat of their pants ... they have no idea how the F to handle this as it continues.

(11,495 posts)I go do my major shopping every two weeks. If I need really need something in between, I go to the local store at 6:30 in the morning. Very few people at that time.
I have plenty to do at home. I take care of my garden, have been doing some remodeling, and have to start pruning some tree limbs out of several trees the wind broke.
And I never leave home without a mask. I have one or more in every vehicle. No way would I go out this weekend, or any other weekend, to a gathering of people I don't know who are celebrating by getting drunk and setting of fireworks!

PS...all last week we have had horrific thunderstorms with hail slamming the windows. Some of the cracks were frightening. I postponed showering until it was over.

My sister and mom, both retired nurses. My mom will be 94 in 2 weeks. We are trying to keep her safe at home. My niece, an active ICU nurse. They had one ICU...they have taken over three floors now, rented more morgue space. This is not a large hospital.

(83,747 posts)Fact is if you go out to the beach with a thousand other people you may well be infected. Go party at a bar, no protection, yep most likely you will be infected and bring it home to you and yours. Then it passes on to others and so on and so on. It is called the spread and that is why cases are escalating.
I never leave the house without mask, gloves and sanitizer. I do my best to protect me and mine and others that I come in contact with.
The ICU director that said this, it is a dire warning that they are understaffed and at full capacity. If you for a moment think this admin is prepared for a second onslaught, then you are kidding yourself. They weren't prepared for the first, I know this as my relative works in ICU...no PPE only raincoats and one mask a day for an 18 hour shift.
Snark is not necessary, care for those you come in contact with are dire. Protection goes both ways.
Me.

(42,770 posts)It sound like they were saying everyone would be dead by August.
I need absolutely zero guidance on the right thing to do is. My dad died because the hospital in Hartford put him in a nursing rehab for his back.

(83,747 posts)On the other hand I will give my deepest sympathy to your dad and you that he died in a nursing rehab facility of COVID. It should never have happened.

(83,747 posts)Instead you attack.
Here.
If you are (not you) are stupid enough to ignore all that health officials are saying then many will never see 08/01.
This is what the ICU director was talking about. They never said all would die, though many will and will continue to spread it. Then more die after having spread it some more. So on and so on.
We will see 130K tonight.
I want to see August 1st. I will be staying at home as I protect a 93 year old, as I have for 2 and a half years. We kept her here and have kept her safe.

(42,770 posts)So much for saying " you say" he died. How kind of you.
This has nothing to do with the horror we are living in nor the uber precautions that many of us our taking.
It only has to do with ONE simple thing...you quoting an unnamed source that we will never see August.
