Los Angeles is shutting its beaches for the holiday weekend around Independence Day as the number of new coronavirus cases spikes, county officials said Monday.
Beaches will be closed to all recreational activities from July 3 through July 6 at 5 a.m. to prevent crowding that could spread the coronavirus.
The county is also prohibiting fireworks displays over the holiday weekend, officials said.
"Closing the beaches and prohibiting fireworks displays during this important summer holiday weekend was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but it's the responsible decision to protect public health and protect our residents from a deadly virus," Barbara Ferrer, director of public health, said in the announcement.

(51,660 posts)He will be enforcing them too...with $$$ to counties who enforce them and no $$$ for those who don't. He doesn't even want families to gather together, even indoors. He can't enforce that though.
"Its family gatherings, said Newsom, where people let down their guard. The governor was most concerned about people taking off masks, giving family members hugs and kisses. Then all of a sudden, you see a spread, he said."
"Asked about mask order enforcement the governor said, Well be doing more to focus on enforcement in this state. Primarily local enforcement. We have conditioned $2.5 billion in our state budget on [local officials] applying the spirit and the letter of the law. If local officials are unwilling to enforce and being dismissive, we will condition those funds on compliance.
"After rolling back coronavirus reopening measures twice in three days, Newsom said on Monday that the positivity rate in the state has, in seven days, risen from 4.4 percent to 5.5 percent, even as the state upped its testing to over 100,000 a day. Newsom revealed that, in the past seven days, positivity looks even worse at 5.9 percent."

Meanwhile in San Diego...
"In the first graph, notice the Daily positivity rate of an astounding 7.21%. Also notice the upward-moving curve of daily positive cases."
